Appetite control

Me again. Everybody says it's ok to gain weight and eat like mad when you're pregnant, but I feel I have absolutley no control. I just started month four and have already gained 20 pounds. I eat generally healthy, I just eat A LOT. I don't plan on dieting or anything like that while pregnant- I want a healthy child. But does anyone have any suggestions on how to control hunger. Is there any foods that anyone has eaten that truely fill you up for a while? My worst hours are 1-2 PM (during Days of our Lives), and 8-9 PM. Thanks!!!!

Re: Appetite control

I too eat alot more while pregnant, and find that controlling your appetite is futile. I just exercise more by walking alot when the weather's nice. It keeps you in good shape and helps after you have the baby too. I lost the weight very quickly with my first, and I attribute most of it to walking a couple of miles a day, when I could.

Re: Appetite control

I know that dieting while preg. is bad. But eating too much is bad too. Now I did the opposite I gained most of my weight at the end of my first preg. I gained 50-55 lbs in all...problem is..only 30lbs are lost during childbirth..and I had severe water retention. This time around I don't control my apetite but I am more careful about what I eat and DRINK. Too many sodas aren't good for your liver so drink more water b/c it is stressed out enough. I hate cranberry juice but I have a little to keep my tracts and kidney cleaned. I eat more fruit and veggies than anything. I found when I snack to eat grapes or carrots..or my fav. strawberies. I won't lie..sometimes I CRAVE french fries..I get some just not the biggest size they have. I don't really watch how much I eat..just the quality of what I eat. It has made all the difference this time. I am 10 weeks and by this time with my son I had gained 5 lbs. This time none. I feel there are too many problems that can be caused by too much weight..such as gestational diabetes and high blood pressure..to risk not eating well as much as possible. I think the biggest misconception I had with my son is that I felt I had to "eat for two." After I had him I read that all a preg. woman needs is the calories in an 8 oz glass of milk. I guess that put things into perspective and I decided my baby needed fruit not 2 bags of chocolate(like my son got!!) Really, discussing this with your doc is a good idea. Most docs won't bring up your weight gain..they KNOW how emotional we are!..unless you say something first. If you tell him/her you are concerned they can tell you if you have a reason to be or not.

PS. I agree with Hillary about exercise..it helps lift your mood and keeps your body active and will use the extra calories..just do it when you feel good enough to do it..don't stress yourself about it.

Re: Appetite control

Purrbaby, I agree with that last reply. Im fortunate, however, to mainly have a propensity to head for healthy foods. I love fruits and veggies! I just eat tons more of them, and also have to have a little junk here and there, which is unusual for me. Im not proud to admit that I am currently having girl scout cookies. Thin mints-yum!!!!

Re: Appetite control

It's good you eat healthy foods. Everyone gains differently. One thing that might help you not overeat is drinking tons of H2O - something we all should be doing anyway. It might help if you drink a tall glass right before you eat so it fills your stomach a little. Don't worry too much. Maybe your weight gain will slow down to the appropriate amount per month (whatever that is). I gained really fast right at the very beginning - like 6 lbs immediately. But I actually lost a pound since my last appt. a month ago. So I've only gained about 6 lbs and I'm almost 4 months too. My friend who is very thin gained over 60 lbs during her pregnancy. I don't know where she put it, I didn't know her then, but I can't imagine.
You know, I find it really hard to understand how we don't gain too much weight with the amount of nutrients we need. I mean, 4 servings of milk (or calcium rich food) a day!! And I really would like to go for walks because I know how good they are, but right now my pelvis is loosening up to the point where I feel somewhat waddly already. And my energy hasn't picked up LIKE IT'S SUPPOSED TO!!!
Well, good luck. If your doctor or midwife thinks it's too much, he or she will let you know. At least you know your baby is getting the nutrients it needs without depleting your stores. That's good!

Re: Appetite control

Hey, I did find something that will definately fill you up, and it's not really fattening either. (Besides lots of H2O.)

This is basically how to make your own fruit parfait, like McDondalds.....

At the grocery store buy the 6 oz container of the Yoplait custard style thick and creamy vanilla flavor yogurt. Only 3.5 grams of fat. Get strawberries and bananas and bluberries or rasberries or what ever else sounds good with bananas and strawberries. Or it's just good with bananas and strawberries. Now you can also get the granola separate too, but let me stress that the granola is going to add alot of fat to this, and it doesn't really improve this already scrumptious treat.

Cut 1 large banana and lots of strawberries and mix it in a bowl with the yogurt. I add a little bit of sugar to it, but you don't have too.

Mmmm,Mmmm, this is sooooo good and filling. And you've just eaten something good for you and baby. Low fat too!

Enjoy!!!

Re: Appetite control

OOHH Hillary I have been WANTING girl scout cookies!! I can't find anyone who sells them! I agree with the drinking lots of water thing. I was in the hospital AGIAN last night with dehydration...sick to my tummy..ugg..and I drink water and orange juice mostly. I hope the little food I can eat is helping the baby. When I saw my doc I told him I can't eat hardly anything. With my son I ate like food has just been invented. This time I have 3 bites and I'm full. I was worried about this but my doc said as long as I eat often I'm ok. It is annoying though. I will be so hungry I know I'm going to eat a whole bunch and I sit down with my pasta and 3 bites later I feel like I ate a dump truck full! I am currently working on the same bowl of strawberries from 4 hours ago. I'm wondering if I need to look at eating some higher calorie foods. I'm afraid to keep losing like I have been..3-5 lbs a week. I am really sick to my tummy still though so maybe this will stop. Any suggestions??
