tubal ligation-possible miscarriage or something else

Hello all, I have a quick but long question. First I have to tell you my story. 4 yrs ago I had a tubal ligation after the birth of my twins by c-section. 11/01 my cycle was supposed to start on the 3rd. Bcse I have such painful periods my dr. advised that I take medidcine 2 days before AF starts. I did, but my 1st mind told me not to, that I was pregnant. I dismissed. Anyway my cycle has always been regular. But this time it wasn't. Instead of starting on the 3rd, it came on the 7th with a vengeance. Normally the 1st 2 days of my cycle are very painful, w/ lots of blood. This one was extrememly painful, but not lots of blood...LOTS of clumps, black clumps(so dark red they looked black). There was hardly no blood on the pads, I cld wear the lighter ones. But there were clumps all in the toilet. On the 9th I wiped myself and clups came out on the tissue. Some I cld squish, 1 I couldn't. It was solid like a piece of meat and there was grey matter on the tissue around it. After that came out the pain subsided considerably, but my cycle went on w/ the clumps. Other symptoms included: tiredness, loss of energy, sore breasts, terrible mood swings, overall lousy feeling..oh.. and athe nagging feeling that I was pregnant. Anyway, i wanted to know if anyone else had experienced this and if so WHAT WAS IT?? I'm 23, non smoker, married, twins. What cld be going on w/me????

I had a miscarriage that sounds very similar to your symptoms.
If you think that you've had one, take yourself to emergancy.
A pregnancy test will still be posative even after a miscarriage.

I hope you are feeling better soon,

Re: tubal ligation-possible miscarriage or something else

Blood in the uterus is mixed with many other cells and tissue from the endometrium. Whenever blood pools or is retained inside the uterus it is likely to clot. When menstrual blood and cells pass immediately outside the body, clots are less likely to form. As a general rule, the redder the blood is, the faster it has reached the outside. The blacker it is, the longer it took to exit the body. If the rate of blood accumulating increases faster than the bodyís ability to transfer it out of the uterus, clots are the result.

Many women routinely have some clotting during menses. Factors that determine whether clots will occur include the size of the uterus, the ability of the uterine myometrium (muscle) to contract, the presence of fibroids or adenomyosis, the diameter of the cervical canal through which the blood must flow, and the presence of any obstruction to the outflow of menstrual products such as polyps, adhesions, etc.

When there is a significant change in the amount or duration of clotting, there are several possible explanations.

1) Pregnancy--Although in your case, since having a tubal, this would be about the last thing to consider.

2) Hormonal changes--Short term: Hormone production can vary for many reasons. Some of these include failure to ovulate, ovarian cysts, and medication. It is not uncommon for any woman to experience an occasionally bizarre menses with unusual clotting. The majority of these occurrences are short-lived and followed by normal periods.

3)Fibroids: Called leiomyomata, fibroids are very common. They are benign growths of muscle that form spheres occupying space within the normal muscle of the uterine wall. They can grow into the inside of the uterus (submucous), stay within the wall (intramural), or grow from the outside surface (subserosal). Sometimes they grow on a stalk (pedunculated). If they interfere with the ability of the entire uterus to contract, bleeding will increase and clots are likely to form.

4) Adenomyosis: When this abnormality occurs, it is commonly associated with a reduction in the ability of the muscle fibers in the uterine wall to contract. This, in turn, can result in clotting.

5) Polyps: Polyps or other growths inside the uterus can act as an obstruction to the outflow of blood during menses. This can increase clotting. These growths can also bleed themselves.

Clots in and of themselves are generally not harmful. One menstrual cycle that is different from your normal pattern probably doesnít mean anything. But if changes continue, you should bring them to the attention of your physician.

Re: tubal ligation-possible miscarriage or something else

You guys don't know how much better I feel. Its nice to have someone to talk to about these things. I have a doctor'a appt. scheduled for next month and I will bring this up, but I sure that its not too much to worry about, right? I was very concerned and very confused, but it was a one time thing and I guess I can try to calm down now. Thanks

Naw, don't worry. <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">

If you went to the doctor today he'd likely say, "Let's wait and see how your next period turns out."

Good luck to ya.
