When do I expect my first period after having a baby?

Hi everyone,

I am new here and have a question. I had a baby on May 14 and have yet to have a period. He was born 3 weeks early and didn't bleed much after delivery. I am now almost 3 months out from delivery and no signs of a period. I did have some cramping about 3 weeks ago but that lasted only 2 days and no spotting or anything.

When do I start to get worried? After having my first son I started 6 weeks after delivery so I am not sure this is normal.

Thank you,

Robin

Are you nursing? If so, you probably won't have a period until after the baby is weaned (at 8 months for me.) If you aren't nursing, I think it should start back up within a couple of months of delivery. Have you asked your doc?

Re: When do I expect my first period after having a baby?

I agree with Greenberry on this ... I nursed both my daughters and with my first I got my period back when she was 6 months (she was eating alot of solid foods ond only nursing 3-4 times a day). With my second, it came back around 3 months when I went back to work and was having problems with pumping (i did not start ovulating for several months after because I was nursing JUST enough to stop it, but that is unusual). If you are not nursing, you might want to check with your doctor, since it would seem you should have started again by now.

Re: When do I expect my first period after having a baby?

Thanks everyone for the replies....

I am not breastfeeding and I also had my tubes tied. My periods before I got preg. were all over the place which might be the case again. I don't want to bug the doctor just yet, I will give it another month or 2 to kinda let it settle out before I ask him.

Thanks everyone,

Robin

Re: When do I expect my first period after having a baby?

Robin,
So was getting your tubes tied painful? My doctor said theres nothing to it, but a very good friend of mine had hers tied the 25th of July--6 weeks after delivering her 3rd child and said it was horrible-much worse than giving birth. She's int he same position I am, her husband is a cop for the same city my husband is a fireman so we have the same insurance company. Our insurance requires us to deliver at a Catholic hopsital--they won't allow tubal ligations at their hospital, so 6 weeks after delivering you have to go to another hospital to have your tubes tied, maybe its easier if you have it done right after giving birth,

Robin,
One more thing, asking your doctor is not "bugging" him, thats what he/she is there for!!

Re: When do I expect my first period after having a baby?

Paramedik, I have also heard that having your tubes tied is worse than giving birth, most recently from a woman who had it done before she left the hospital from having her second baby. I suppose I'll still have it done after baby No. 3 or 4, but I have really heard some not good things about it.

Re: When do I expect my first period after having a baby?

Greenberry,
My mom puts it this way--a few weeks of pain while recovering from getting my tubes tied has got to be better than 18 years of raising another kid. We definitely don't want baby no.3 to come along so I guess I will suck it up and do it anyway. I've also been told by people its not bad at all...guess I"ll have to find out for myself.

Re: When do I expect my first period after having a baby?

Well I had a C-Section with both of my sons. And we just arranged to have my tubes tied while they were "in" there delivering the baby so I felt nothing because of the Spinal. I did then feel pulling on the inside because of the clips they use to tie the tubes for a few weeks and still do if I move the wrong way to fast.

I had 2 beautiful sons and had horrible pregnancies so I did not want to ever be pregnant again. I was fed IV for 3 months and had nothing by mouth during that time because of severe nausea. I was also on medicine for my migraines and I was very worried about the baby and withdrawls for him. Well it all worked out ok and baby had nothing like that, was in the NICU for 5 days because of breathing problems from being to early. (they did an amniocentisis to check for lung maturity cause my headaches were out of control and I went into labor so they delievered him 3 weeks earlier then planned). But again I was sooooo lucky that he didn't have any affects from my headache meds. This is another reason I do not want to have another, my headaches are really tough to handle and pregnancy makes them 10 times worse.

Thanks for listening,

Robin

Migraine headaches since the birth of my first son in 1996. After every treatment I could find and several neuros, headache specialist and pain management doctors my PCP finally took over my care.

I am on 60 mg MS Contin twice a day and it has saved my life!

Re: When do I expect my first period after having a baby?

Robin,
I have headaches that they have yet to quite figure out the particular type, they are not migraines, therefore i can not take any migraine medication for them, I have had CT scans, MRI's, you name it, they've done it trying to get to the bottom of it. I got a headache on December 23rd 2000 and it did not go away until February 8th 2001. THey finally found one thing that althought it didn't cur the problem it helped significantly-I was put on Pamelor(a tricyclic anti depressant with the side effect of hel[ing relieve chronic unexplained headaches-even though I did not suffer from depression) well being pregnant I cannot take those and my headaches are absolutely unbearable, they only meds I can take are tylenol(oh boy) and Fioricet(barbituates and caffeine and tylenol) the fioricet doesn't help either. Right now I have had this particular headache 128 hours, it could go away in an hour, a week,a month, who knows. My first son was born emergency c-section and had no heart beat and wasn't breathing he spent 8 days in the NICU. But even if I have a C-Section with this one, they still can't tie my tubes because the hopsital is Catholic and wont allow it. So I'm kind of in the same situation you are, pregnancy is miserable for me and I don't care to go through it again

Re: When do I expect my first period after having a baby?

Pregnancy is pretty much crappy for me too. I had forgotten how much until I experienced another round of gut-wrenching nausea yesterday and today. I did not have as rough a time as you, rfcork, but I can sympathize to some extent. I only gained 12 pounds with my first pregnancy due to being constantly nauseated for the entire nine months. And almost as sickening was all of the chirpy folks at my office who said "Why you're way past your first trimester. You ought to be feeling better by now" as I threw my entire lunch into the garbage because I couldn't even look at it. I was hoping this time would be better, but so far, I have been let down. And I do plan to endure this at least one more time after this one, because we really want at least 3 children. After that, though, I think I'll have suffered enough and look forward to that tube-tying procedure, unpleasant as it may be.
