I had my first doctor's appointment yesterday - 14 weeks and got to hear my baby's heartbeat for the first time. It was the most beautiful sound I ever heard in my life - definitely a birthday gift from God. Yesterday was my birthday by the way.
Anyhow, during my examination, the doctor pressed really hard on my stomach, feeling for the position of my uterus I believe? Anyhow, he was really surprised at how far up it was and made a comment that I must definitely be further along than 14 weeks. I told him I know for sure my dates are correct because I was charting my cycles and my LMPs. I then asked if it was possible that I could be carrying twins since twin pregnancies do run in my family. The doctor said that's definitely a possibility - usually one of the things they consider when women measure large for their dates.
Has anyone else experienced this and if so did it turn out you were having twins? I won't be having my ultrasound for another 3 weeks so I'm really curious. I have been feeling what I believe is movement already but from my book "What to Expect When You're Expecting" that can be expected between weeks 14-22. I am a heavier set girl though so I assumed it would take longer.
I would certainly appreciate some opinions.
I can't really help, except that they have always misjudged my dates by the size of my uterus. One midwife said I felt about 12 weeks when I was only 7! And it happened again, although I knew I was not that far along.
It seems they would have heart 2 heartbeats if you were carrying twins, but maybe they can't tell because they think it's the same one. Are you hopeful for twins? Just curious. Good luck.
Hi Molly
My husband and I are really hoping this pregnancy turns out to be twins. I mean we're not going to be disappointed if we find out we're having just the one baby - but wow - 2 babies. There's a history of twins on my mother and father's side so the doctor has me really curious now.
The doctor had been called to the emergency room earlier that morning so everyone's appointments were running about 40 minutes late. I think that may have been part of the reason why he may not of checked for a second heartbeat. I'm also thinking he's waiting for the ultrasound just to be absolutely positive. Just so there's no mistaking one heartbeat for two.
How far along are you in your pregnancy now?
Thanks for your reply.
