i think my ob/gyn made a mistake

i am 4 months pregnant and have been seeing the same ob/gyn since i was 6 weeks pregnant. hes a very sweet man but i think he made a mistake with a medication he prescribed for me. i have a bladder infection and he said he was prescribing antibiotics for me. so i went to the pharmacy and when i got home i noticed it was sulfatrim, i know from previous experience that sulfa is not safe during pregnancy so i called the pharmacy, the pharmacyst said that he would not recomend this drug either as it was catagory c and that there are safer drugs out there. i then called the doctor and he asured me that this drug is safe and hes been using it for years on his pregnant patients and he would in no way harm me or my baby and to trust him. well after reading more on this drug im sorry but i will not take it. i am now looking into a different ob/gyn. has anyone here taking this drug? should i trust this doc? even if books and the pharmacyst say dont take it??

If i were you i would make a few more phone calls to other docs and see what they say - if you are worried then i do suggest do not take it.

Let me know how you go.

You definatly have to trust what you feel is right for the baby. Just ask the dr if maybe he has an alternative. If he thinks your being rude or questioning his judgement just tell him that the medication made you sick or something ( I don't like to lie but I don't think it would hurt if you were protecting your child).

happy and healthy 5 more months to you

Hey foofighter,

I would definitely not take it if that is what your instincts are saying! Definitely call someone else and see what they say and if you feel better with them you may need to switch. I am sooo sorry you have had to deal with all this!

By the way, so when are you due? I don't have you on the edd list yet! Is this your first?

I'm very surprised your Dr. didn't put you on Macrobid. I hear that is safe during pregnancy (please correct me if I'm wrong!), and it has been around for many many years.

I don't blame you for being nervous, especially if the pharmacist frowned on what he prescribed you.

Good luck!

Re: i think my ob/gyn made a mistake

thats exactly what the pharmacyst said. but when i called the doctor and told him that the pharmacyst recomended a different safer drug he said oh that is a very expensive drug and the one i prescribed is 100% safe. i have insurance so it wouldnt cost me a dime. and no sulfa is not 100% safe it caused fetal deformities in rats and mice and was not tested on humans. im never going back to him. he also said one thing awhile ago, im scheduled for a c section and i asked him where the c section incision would be since i already had a c section before so i wondered if the new incision would be over the old one and he said he would "erase" the old scar doing plastic surgery and make another incision under it. this sounded a little weird to me but i let it go so to speak. where would the second insision be??

I'm glad you're going to another Dr. if he doesn't want to listen to your concerns then he's not a good Dr. I had several bladder infections while pregnant. With the first baby I was given ampicillian, and with the 2nd Macrobid. Lately Macrobid is all I've heard of OBs giving their patients. Good for you fot listening to your gut. I didn't have to have C-sections, so I can't help with that question. Good luck finding a new Dr.

Re: i think my ob/gyn made a mistake

i just made an appointment with another doctor one that my family has been using for years now. (hes located a distance away that is why i didnt go to him and found one closer to my home instead) my appointment isnt for another 2 weeks unfortunetly
and that was a sqeeze in they origionally told me a month from now! as for my bladder infection im drinking plenty of water and cranberry juice, i dont even feel like i have a bladder infection. all i did was tell the doctor i have been having lower pain in the front and back and he said its a bladder infection, he didnt test my urine though. i do go peepee alot lol but without any burning at all. so i think i can hold out for 2 weeks without meds.

i am due august 2

Hey I hope this doc works out better for you! They didn't even test to see if you really had a bladder infection?! That's crazy.

Feel free to pop in to the July/August thread and let us know how you are doing!!

You are due one day after me and the same day as LovelyMe!! It's going to be a down time on here towards the end of July and beginning of August because we will all be in having our babies!! I hope though we can all come back on afterwards at least to see who had their little one first and how everything went!

God Bless,

Hey you!! I am due August 2nd also!! I think the whole plastic surgery thing sounds really out of whack. Look him up onthe internet and see if he certified to fo plastic surgery procedures or if he is even certified for much else! Good for you for going with your gut!

That whole c-section thing does sound a little bizarro.... I have never heard of such (an ob doing plastic surgery??). I know several women that have had multiple c-sections, and always assumed it was routine to go in at the scar from the last one. I'd definitely get second opinions. Good luck!

Re: i think my ob/gyn made a mistake

I think I *might* know what he is talking about ("plastic surgery"). If a repeat c-section is to be done on someone, doctors will usually cut you open and take out the baby just like usual, going through, or JUST below or above the old scar line. Once the baby is out, and they've started to do all of the routine clean-up on you, they actually remove the old scarring. After everything has been so stretched, it makes no difference to the surrounding area to remove a little bit of scarring/tissue. By doing this it reduces the risk of rupture during later pregnancys because of repeat incisions through the same spot, and if in the future you become pregnant with multiples, it gives you a better chance to avoid having a vertical incision (sometimes they have to do them, because the risk of rupturing the uteris by cutting through the old scarring is too high and can result in hemmorage, hystorectomy <didn't spell that right>, and sometimes death), rather than the now usual "bikini line" cut.

That's the only thing I can think of that could be referred to as "plastic surgery".
