magnets during prgnancy

I recently used a heat/massage pad from a friend. It wasn't until after 15 min of use that I noticed the pad had magnets inside. It was warned that pregnant women and heart patients shouldn't use this product. I am 5 1/2 mo pg and am wondering if any harm could have been done and why magnet therapy shouldn't be used while pg.

Re: magnets during prgnancy

from what i've heard it's just a precautionary measure to not use magnets during pregnancy, meaning they have no idea what magnets might do to a baby. just like it's precautionary to not do a lot of things during pregnancy (like don't drink too much coffee and don't ride horses... silly example, but the only one i can come up with right now). i think that 15 minutes of exposure to magnets will not hurt your baby in the slightest. and besides, they do occasionally perform MRI's (magnetic resonance imaging) on pregnant women if the need arises, and they believe it is fairly safe. and the magnets they use in those machines can pull paper clips out of a doctor's pocket from across the room (some interesting articles online about that). those little magnets in the heating pad probably aren't very strong. and you only had them on there for 15 minutes. and your baby is completely formed already. so if i were you i would mention it to my doctor, relax, and give that heating pad back!

p.s. forgot to mention, the only time heart patients can't use magnetic therapy is when they have a pacemaker, cuz the magnets interfere with the mechanism in the pacemaker. Nothing to do with magnets affecting the heart itself.

Re: magnets during prgnancy

I had an MRI done while I was pregnant at 5-1/2 months to be exact, both my nuerologist and my ob felt it would be perfectly safe, so I am crossing my fingers that it was due date 4/16/02. So relax!
