Joanna, Kim, Julie, aem ... how are the babies doing??

I havent had much time to come check in lately, but I was wondering how you guys and your little ones were doing!

Kai and I are coming along. We are super-busy going to Seattle every 12 days for cast changes for his club foot. Things there are going along real smooth and nice tho

On the bad side, we found (the VERY hard way) on Monday that Kai is severely allergic to formula. It was the 5th time he had had formula in his 5 weeks ... I went out to get diapers so daddy gave him a bottle (didnt have any pumped yet) well, he got hives where it dripped on him, so DH stopped feeding it to him right away (THANK GOD!) and he only had 1 1/2 oz. About 30 mins later I began nursing him ... which accelerated the digestion of the formula ... and he began to swell. We called 911, knowing it was anaphylaxis, and when the ambulance FINALLY got here (their radio malfunctioned ... thankfully the medic had been listening to the fire dept EMT channel) off we went to the ER. A block from the hospital, epinephrine became necessary as he was starting to wheeze ... poor little guy made it ok, but what an ordeal!! The stupid ER doctor's only advice? "Dont give him Enfamil formula!" Gee, like I hadnt figured that one out!

I also developed mastitis this week. Now THAT sucks really bad! It feels like hot pokers right thru my breast just sitting, and trying to nurse on that side is excruciating! I tell you guys, it just hasnt been our week!

So, I wanna hear all the wonderful and ugly details of how you guys have been doing! Hopefully far better than us

PS - Joanna ... when I saw one of the early posts under your new screen name I THOUGHT it was you! Why did you change your name?

Re: Joanna, Kim, Julie, aem ... how are the babies doing??

I am sorry to here about what poor little Kia had to go through! MAN that is awful! Good thing your hubby was paying attention & knew enough to stop feeding him.
Doctors just drive me nuts sometimes! The say the silliest things & act like we know NOTHING!

Riley is just doing great. We went to see the Doctor on Wednesday & she is now up to 5 pounds 13 ounces. She has almost doubled her birth weight. Tonight & Saturday night Daddy is going to take ALL of the feedings so I can try to catch up on some rest. That is going to be wonderful. Since he has to leave the house every morning at 6:30 I do the 12:00 am, 3:00am, & 6:00am feedings & that has really caught up with me by Friday night so he is pretty good at taking those for me on the weekends.

We went out of town last weekend & I forgot to grab her vitamins out of the fridge when we left to come home & her Doctor said that we could see how she does on her weight gain for the next week & see if she really still needs to be on them & her pooping has really increased. She was only going about once every 3 days & now that she has been off of that extra iron dose she is starting to poop several times a day & does not seem to get as fussy. I am crossing my fingers that we do not have to go back to the nasty stuff. If we do I think I will just start her back & only give them to her every other day & see how that works.

I think I am off to a good hot bath & then curl up in bed for the next 12 hours!

I was glad to hear from Joanna as well. I was wondering the same thing about her screen name.

Thanks for thinking of us & keep us posted on how things go with Kia's foot. It sounds like the casting is going to work out nice for you guys! That drive has got to suck, but it will all be worth it in the end! It is amazing what we will go through for these little ones isn't it?

Re: Joanna, Kim, Julie, aem ... how are the babies doing??

Angel...wow thats awful abot Kai and being allergic to formula...we recently had a simialr situation with tylenol and my four year old being allergic to it, it was awful.
THe moderators said that I had to change my screen name because since these are health related forums having the user id name "paramedik" would "lend undue weight to my opinions". No big deal...they were nice about it, they apologized for taking so long to catch on. I guess you're not even supposed to let people know you're in the medical field...I was keeping an eye on a guys post and he said in it he was a paramedic and they pulled the whole post and all its responses.
Lauren has been doing pretty good..she's such a chubby baby. she was 18lbs(at 3 1/2 months old), shes in a 6-9 month or 12 month in footed sleepers. She's been sick since last Saturday with an Ear infection and a nasty nasty stomach bug...shes down to 15 lbs and finally feeling better. I've felt sooo bad for her.
We were at the doctors office on Tuesday and she was crying because she felt like crap and this strange woman came up and grabbed ahold of her and was trying to take her from me and said"Do you mind if I hold on to your baby for a mintue?" I couldnt believe it. TO make a long story short, just about everybody in the waiting room was watching as This woman and I are tugging opposite directions on my child. I finally threatened her and she let go. I"m sure her intentions were good, but I"m not going to hand my child off to some stranger. Had she not been a fellow patient of my doctor I would have called the cops if we had been anywhere else.
Anyway, its really late and I need to get to bed but you ladies take care!
Joanna

Re: Joanna, Kim, Julie, aem ... how are the babies doing??

hey girls! FntsyAngel, I was starting to worry about you bc we hadnt heard from you in so long! I hope Kai is doing better- how crazy is that that he was allergic to the formula!! What was in it that gave him such a rection, do you know? Hey, I have a question for you but I'm going to make a seperate post for it bc I think that maglib is nursing too.

Things are going really well here. I was at my moms all last week to help with her chemo treatments and I'm finally back at home and back to a regular schedule with Liam, so that's been kind of nice. And yall might think this is weird, but I've finally REALLY bonded with him. I think it finally sunk in that he's mine, and it helps that he can smile and coo now and recognize me. The first 6 weeks are so hard- it's amazing we keep our sanity!! I hope things continue to go well for each of you.

Kim, enjoy your mothers visit and take care of her! I'm glad for you that she got to come and visit.

Joanna, what are you feeding that girl!!? And I hope your son is feeling better after the Tylenol trauma- what exactly happened?

Jules, how is the formula thing going and Dylans colic? Have you figured out what the problem was?

Yall have a good day and take care!

Re: Joanna, Kim, Julie, aem ... how are the babies doing??

Hey ladies- good to hear from all of you!

Joanna I remember your old screen name but I didn't realize this was you! I think Dylan is heading in the same direction as Lauren... he is up to almost 11 lbs. at 5 1/2 weeks!!! He fits into some of his 3 month outfits already.

Angel- what happened to Kai's foot? I must have missed the story...
It is SO frightening when something goes wrong... this weekend we thought Dylan had a fever and he has been congested pretty bad and having some crying spells, so we took him into the ER in the middle of the night only to realize we needed to take his temp rectally- and when they did his temp was a perfect 98.6. We made the trip for nothing! But it's better safe than sorry...

Kim- those are the EXACT times Dylan eats at night! Your hubby takes them ALL for two nights?! I am lucky to have mine do one feeding each night of the weekend (he usually takes the 6am feeding b/c he's used to getting up that early anyway). I can't wait until Dylan sleeps through the night.

Ashley- I'm sorry to hear about your mom, and sorry it took me so long to say so- I have been so busy this past week! Anyway, Dylan is doing great, but he still has a few bad nights (like last night- awake from late afternoon - 2am). Other times he sleeps great (7 hours straight again once this weekend). I don't think it is colic anymore since it is this mild... maybe just gassiness and a little confusion over night and day.
How is Liam doing? They are getting so responsive now aren't they? Taking it all in more and more... I am starting to like this mom business.

Re: Joanna, Kim, Julie, aem ... how are the babies doing??

Kim - I am glad to hear that Riley is doing so well. She has really come far from her birth! You are so lucky to be getting out of that many feedings. My DF works graveyard, so no luck for me. I havebeen really apathetic about pumping, too, so I am pretty much required at all feedings. Good thing Kai know how to nurse in bed!

Joanna - all I have got to say is WOW! Lauren sure sounds healthy!! I am glad she got over her illness ... it makes mommy feel so powerless to not be able to do anything when baby is sick As for that woman in the Dr's office ... I would have decked her!!

Ashley - We suspect it was the milk protien that he is allergic to ... but he will be going for some allergy testing next week to confirm. I bet you had a rough couple days with Liam being off schedule! And no, it doesnt sound weird that it took a while to bond ... it took me 6 MONTHS to bond with Arica, my middle child!!

Julie - I think I just put a short line in his birth story about Kai's foot (which I am sure you just skimmed when you came back from having Dylan). Kai was born with a clubfoot and has to have *roughly* weekly casting done to correct it. I am sorry to hear that Dylan has a cold ... that is just the worst at that age (I really hate the nasal aspirator!), but am glad to hear he did not have a fever. The ER here told me with a confirmed fever in a baby less than 6 weeks they do a SPINAL TAP!! Just to CHECK! I was like "I dont think so ... you better be showing me bad bloodwork first!"

As for us, we just found out yesterday that Kai's foot is doing SO good that he will only need one more cast before going into braces!! It took the bare minimum to fix his foot! We are absolutely thrilled!

Anyway, you ladies all take care! kisses to the babies!

Re: Joanna, Kim, Julie, aem ... how are the babies doing??

Oh my! I am so glad to hear that everyone is doing better.

Angel. I'm glad to hear that you are finding out what Kai is allergic to and that your dh was so responsive (I don't think my dh would have been that quick). Do you need to change your eating habits as a result of his allergies? Oh I have heard about mastititis and I complain of the cracks! I don't know how you can do it! What are they telling you to do to relieve the pain? My cousin had a baby who had to do the cast thing and it was so hard on them as the baby was so heavy and the soiling of the cast was so icky (a full cast was on her as it was a hip problem which she is now fully recovered from). I am so happy for you that you won't have to keep up the cast. what are the next steps for Kai?

Ashley, I don't know how you do it with taking care of your mother and Liam. It is so hard. (My father passed from cancer and it was so hard taking care of him for the month that we knew and I didn't have any children so my prayers are with you.

Kim, can you send your dh over to relieve me this weekend? I can really use some zzzzzzzzzz's. My dh doesn't even normally wake up when Robert cries. I don't know how he does it, the crying gets so under my skin! Robert on a good day eats at 10pm, 2am, 4am, 6am, 8am, 10am and then not till 1pm, 4pm, 5pm, 7pm,8pm (Yes hourly in the early evening, this is his fussy time). He follows this schedule probably 4x/week and the other 3 are way up in the air and usually are more middle of night feedings. How often does every one elses babies feed? Oh and I am so happy to hear that your mom can see Riley. That was such wonderful news! Also on the Neosure, why can't you direct mail order from the manufacturer (I know Neosure is made by Similac and they have a direct mailing for all their formulas, also did you join the Similac club so they send you coupons for formula (I know they don't send as much if you say you are part of WIC when you join)).

Joanna, I don't believe how someone else would just take your baby like that. The nerve of some people. Usually I get people asking but, never trying to take him! Wow. I hope Lauren is over her ear infection. She is such a big girl and I'm sure adorable!

Julie, I hope Dylan is doing wonderful. He sure sounds healthy! I guess formula is doing him well?

Well Robert finally gained back his birth weight and is now 8lbs 5 oz at 3.5 weeks. I stopped the antibiotics last Thursday and he gained a whole pound since then. Incredible how bad it effected him.

We now found out that he has a blocked tear duct. It is very common but his one eye is always crusty and he got a slight tear on the side due to it always being wet so the ped gave him antibiotics to keep his eye from being infected. The only thing we need to do is clean his eye a few times a day and massage his ducts and we were told it s/b ok soon.

He has been off schedule with sleeping and was up from 2am to 10am this morning. My middle son has a sore throat cold thing and he is also awake (it seems like he always wakes exactly the moment the baby fell asleep). I am on my last licks today. It seems that I am late to everything!

My incision is finally almost healed. It is only open about a half inch now and as I said I am no longer taking antibiotics and all I have to do is clean it daily. A lot less time is needed to manage it. thankfully!

I will have to tear myself away now so that I can get some rest.
