Hi everyone!
I'm pregnant with my first and had been on Claritin before I was pregnant. I stopped taking it as soon as I found out, but have had really bad allergies since. I am now 1 week out of my first trimester and have started taking it again. I was wondering if anybody has had children while on Claritin, or has heard anything about it - positive or negative - from their Dr. Thanks for any feedback.
Yes, I'm a druggie..not really..but it must seem that way. I take Claritin in the spring for my allergies. This is one of the drugs on the list of drugs my doc says is ok. Benadryl allergy is also ok. I have also taken Prevacid(for acid reflux), Tylenol PM(for pain and so I could sleep) Immodium AD(well you know) and reg. Tylenol. The best thing to do if you are unsure is to call your doc's nurse and ask for a list or write down all the meds you take and get an ok. I call my doc's nurse a lot but they don't mind..that is their job. Right now I am sick and I have to take antiboitics and cough syrup and Affrin. I don't worry b/c a doc wouldn't let you take it if it would hurt your baby. I call and ask about EVERY drug. I am in no means saying take drugs all the time anytime..but there are some things that are ok. When in doubt call your doc or even the ob floor you will deliver at. You can speak to a nurse and they don't mind helping. I think they understand how confusing it can be. I know some people feel anything more than Tylenol is killing your child. But my son is fine. I couldn't even take my prenatal vitamins with him(gasp!) I took Flinstone vitamins. No constipation and NO vomiting. Tailor your preg. to your needs and always ask your doc before you take any new meds. Your doc or midwife gets good money...get good use out of them. Don't let this become the worst time of your life.

Oh Purrbaby do I agree with your post. I'm a druggie too. I get so sick of people telling me that I have to "suffer" while I'm pregnant. I have always had bad headaches my whole life and they've gotten worse since I got pregnant and my sinuses have gotten really bad. I had been taking Tylenol Sinus plus cough medicine and my OB just prescribed Claritin last week. It makes no sense for me to suffer everyday with a pounding headache. The stress is not good for my baby. When I told my sister I was taking medication she looked at me with disdain and said "I never took anything while I was pregnant". Hey, that's great for you but some of us have allergies/headaches/colds, etc. How is it any less stress on my baby if I'm lying in bed every day in pain crying my eyes out. As you said, as long as my doc. approves it, I take it. I don't want to be miserable throughout this pregnancy and I think our babies are a lot stronger than we think.
YEAH!! I feel some support here!! LOL!! No really, rght now I am sick with an upper respiratory tract infection and I am on antibiotics and cough medicine. Before this my doc told me to take Benadryl allergy. My son came out fine last time..so I guess this one will be fine too. I just assume that my doc doesn't want to be sued by me for prescribing something that could kill my child. They say in the news malpractice insurance is on the rise..I'm sure he doesn't need my wrath too. I figure I pay my doc enough and he is the head of the dept. he might know a little more than me!! LOL!! Also, after 8 years of college I'm sure he knows what meds will and will not kill my unborn child. I guess I would rather feel good enough to take care of my son than sit around in pain and suffer. But there is no perfect way to "do" preg. and everyone has their own methods. We chose to be "druggies" <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">
