I live in California too and in our state we have HEALTHY FAMILIES. Its a low cost insurance funded by the government. THey only insure children 0-18 years and pregnant woman. I belive the cost is between $6-$10 per month and you can choose your plan that you want such as kiser, blue cross, blue shield, etc... That way you will be totally covered and they will pay for all your prenatel, and the birth, and plus you can put your baby on the plan after. www.healthyfamilies.ca.gov
[This message has been edited by Nicksmom (edited 03-21-2002).]
Hello there, thank you so much for your help. We are not sure if we qualify, as I am a full green card holder and my girlfriend has a work permit, but she was not in the USA prior to 1996. I have lived here since 1986, and this is my home now, and we want to bring our child up here in S. Cal.
If there are any more ideas you have that could maybe help us, we would be so very grateful.

Q: Do I or my children have to be US citizens to be eligible for the Healthy Families Program?
A: No. A child may be a citizen, national, or qualified immigrant. A child enrolled in the program must provide one of the following:
A birth certificate
Certificate of Naturalization (N-550 or N-570)
Certificate of Citizenship (N-560 or N-561)
US Citizenship Identification Card (I-197)
An INS Form (I-551/Green Card)
An employment authorization card issued by the INS
A parentís immigration status is not considered.
Hears something that I cut and pasted for you from there website so I bet you that you can qualify. Call the 800 number and ask someone.
Something else you might qualify for is Medicaid and they pay for everything...except a circumsion which here runs $190. Just apply for it and you will most likely get it. My Dad makes $60,000 a year yet my stepmom didn't work and she got Medicaid. She had my brother almost 6 months ago. I never tried to get it b/c I have fairly good ins. My parents have none and I think that is why they got it. My hubby makes 1/2 what my dad does and we didn't even get WIC. And they do!!! In a way that burns me b/c we struggle and they are off buying cars and fancy crap they don't need and all of our extra money is going to buying formula! On average I spend $88 a month b/c I buy the powder kind. It would be more if I bought any other kind. Hope this helps some!

It's called Medi-Cal for Pregnancy. I am on it because of a weird income situation. It's a long story. Anyway, in your case, Medical for pregnancy covers everything that is involved in prenatal care (doctors appointments, vitamins, etc.) and the birth. I don't know about circumcision, but that might not be your choice anyway. If your girlfriend goes to your local Dept. of Welfare office they will schedule her right away because pregnancy is considered an emergency situation. But be prepared to wait for hours. She might not have to wait that long, but be prepared in case. That's just the preliminary visit. They will schedule her for an appointment with a social worker and will be told the income documents she will need to bring. I had to bring my drivers licence, birth certificate, social security card, and all of our income documents. If you don't have any assets, and only an income every month, it will be easier and faster. I don't know what she will need to bring seeing as your girlfriend is not a citizen, but they will give her a list so she can be prepared. Don't worry, she will be covered because your child will be born in the United States, giving it automatic citizenship (as far as I understand).
As for the Healthy Families Program, my daughter is currently on that and it is wonderful. I pay 6 dollars a month and she has full coverage, including dental! There is a 5 dollar co-pay for office visits and prescriptions. If you don't qualify for Healthy Families because your income is too low, they will automatically send your application to the Medi-Cal dept..
Because you and your girlfriend are not married, I don't think your income will count, which might be beneficial to you. I'm not sure about that, but I think she is considered single.
I hope you don't find this all too confusing. To find your local Department of Welfare, look in the phonebook under government agencies. It's in the STATE department. Give them a call and find out where they are located. Go there with your girlfriend and wait and they will schedule your girlfriend an appointment and you'll be on your way. Your baby can also qualify for Medi-cal once he or she is born as long as your income is below a certain level. I'm not sure what that is, but the federal poverty level for year 2002 is $15,020.00 for a family of 3. It's $11,940.00 for a family of 2 (just your girlfriend and baby). I am not sure which family size you would fall under. As long as her income is below that amount, she will definately qualify for Medi-Cal. And even if it's higher than that, she might still be able to qualify, I'm just not sure.
Thanks Molly that helped. Here in Mississippi we have Medicaid and I knew other states had the same thing but they are all called something different. Sounds like your daughter has great coverage. I wish my son could get something like that. We are too poor to get good dental coverage..just good medical coverage and too rich to get any help. It gets frustrating!! I wish they had help for people who can't afford millions of dollars for ins. I spend $102 a month for my whole family but I do not have eye or dental coverage..and I wear contacts!! My hubby's work doesn't cover it.
