Post bathroom question

A friend of mine has told me nemerous times that straining to use the bathroom (#2) can cause you to go into premature labor. I really don't think this is true but can someone just clear it up for me. I am 4months and she thinks that if I am constipated and try to use the bathroom that I could go into labor?? I know this may be a silly question but could it really happen??

thanks,
april

Both of you can relax a bit. The chances of you going into premature labor simply by having a bowel movement are minimal. In the cases that I have heard of, a bowel movement did help start the labor process but only because there were other factors at play as well.

If you are concerned about constipation, which can be bothersome during pregnancy, make sure you are getting adequate amounts of fiber and fresh fruits. They should help you stay regular and not have to strain so much. Hemorrohoids are a regular occurance during pregnancy that result from straining too much.

Just my thoughts on it,

sprout

I think you can relax about that. If that were true, probably no babies would make it to term!

In order to be in labor, your cervix has to soften and dialate. I don't see how straining will cause that to happen. Pushing doesn't do a thing untill your fully dialated.

Actually pushing too hard does the opposite usually. It causes your cevix to swell making it harder for it to soften or dialate. Hense, why they etll you not to push prior to 10 cm.

Just to let you ladies know,

I too was very constipated and my doctor recommended metamucil.......I drink the solution - but when I run out I will get the tablets.

It has worked wonders!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely no problems......no straining and probably no hemmroids - (ok - we'll maybe after all that pushing after Labor and delivery)

take care,
