Post Some things I have learned...(info everyone needs)

I don't want anyone getting mad at me for posting to much. This is just somethings that I have learned that I feel everyone needs to know. If I would of known them before things may of been different, but now that I know I want to share it with others.
1. Get your family history. I thought I knew mine, but I was wrong. There are somethings that people do not want to share. I knew my grandmother had 2 miscarriages (due to the RH factor thing) I never knew that my great grandmother had a still birth...and I really never knew that the problems the baby had was dealing with the head. I never knew that. I never knew that my great aunt had 3 miscarriages due to who knows what. On my dads side I never knew that a great aunt had a baby that was born with a water head (which sounds alot like what mine has) I knew that my dad in a previous marriage had one baby born premature that didn't make it....I didn't know that he had another one still born with many problems...once again dealing with the head. The doctors said that problems like this can be found in many families, but it normally something that they do not wish to talk about. All of these people ended up having many healthy children after this. Please everyone...take the time to sit down and try to do a genetic family tree. All these problems can be prevented with Folic Acid, but you like me may need a stronger formula of it.
2. Know were your family is from. I honestly did not know where mine was so when we got our genetic work up down I had to ask my mom. Turns out mine is European, mainly from Scottland, Ireland and France. Okay....defects like mine come from mainly women with Scottish or Irish decent....once again though more folic acid could of helped.
I really don't want to upset anyone, but I wish that someone would of told me all of this before...or maybe I should of known I don't know. The deffect my baby has happens in 1 in 100,000 babies. Neural Tube defects happen in 1 in 1, 000 babies....this can be stopped with Folic Acid. My chances of this happening again is 5 our of 100, but with my perscription strength folic acid it will go back to 1 in 1,000. Please everyone that is TTC sit down and ask your doctor about the stronger folic acid. If I would of known what I know now I would of been on the stronger stuff....My sisters are on Folic acid now...Please no one get upset with me...I'm just trying to help.

Carmen. There is no way we could possibly get mad at you for posting these things. We need to know this stuff and it will probably prove very helpful to a lot of people. You have taken a terrible situation and made it into something positive, you are trying to help other couples so they don't have to go through what your family has went through. I think this is a very wonderful thing that you are doing for everyone and I think that the more information you find, the more you should post!
My thoughts and prayers are with you and I wish you only happiness. Once again, thank you for everything!

Thanks! I just don't want to scare anyone even though it is something that could happen, but it can be stopped. As I find out more I will post it....I would hate for anyone else to go through this.

Darling, why would you even think for a second that anyone would be mad at you for posting such valuable information?!!

I have learned a lot by listening to you. More than you would ever know. You are truly an amazing woman. Thanks to you, I'm aware of what I need to get my baby off to a healthy start. I didn't really know much about the importance of folic acid until I came here. I thank you so much for teaching me this important lesson, and I am thinking of you and your family all the time. You are free to post as much information as you can get your hands on. Don't ever feel as if you are posting too much, because you're not!!!

=)

Carmen,

Such a nice way to share information, thank you. I am also of Scottish decent and found your information interesting.

We just finished our genetic counseling and tests, due to our age, and there are some very interesting things to look at. All our tests came out fine thankfully.

FYI: My specialists mentioned some other types of genetic problems to give me examples, and this is something you may want to be tested for. There is a genetic defect/an inability of the enzyme that breaks down folic acid to actually use the folic acid correctly in many people who aren't even aware of it. I never knew that. May be worth checking out.

I have a blood clotting disorder, didn't find out until I was pregnant, that's why the genetic testing. There are many things you could be tested for especially with such a strong family tendency toward neural tube defects and stillborn babies. I would ask your doctor or a genetic specialist.

May I ask where you live in Texas? Reason being that if you are anywhere close to Brownsville or the Rio Grande I understand from my mom that several years ago they did a huge study there because of hospitals reporting an alarming rate of babies born with lethal neural tube defects.

The CDC/Center for Disease Control came in and come to find out, there were company plants on either side of the Rio Grande that were dumping toxic waste into the water. Not sure of whole story, you could go to discovery channel website and look it up. But they advised women in that area to stop cooking with and drinking the city water there I guess. Don't know all the details. If you and your family have been in that area for long that may be a contributing factor.

You are a stong woman and I've been so deeply touched by all that has happened to you, especially because we had the same due dates. I wish you and your DH an easy transition during this period and pray your little one comes to join you soon happy and healthy!

In Love and Light!

I'm not from either of those places...now where close to them, but I had read about that also. I have also read about the enzyme that makes it were you can't break down folic acid. The many doctors I have seen doesn't seem to think I have that problem, but that is why they are putting me on the prescreption folic acid...it is stronger and I do believe easier to break down. I'm going to keep learning all I can....I don't want to go through this again, and would hate to see anyone else have to....I know how it hurts. I'm hoping that I can help other women so that they do not have to feel this pain....

Carmen - Thankyou for sharing! How are you doing? Did you have to go to the hospital after the cramps? What did the doctor say when you called him this morning? Are you still going off for the weekend w/DH? I think that's a great idea.

We are going to go away next week after we get through all of this. My doctor said that I will be induced either Monday or Tuesday. It is going to be treated as a miscarriage since that is what it is. He said that I need to plan on being in the hospital for a few days and that it is going to be hard on me...so I'm going to try and prepare myself for that. The cramps are getting pretty bad now....he told me to call him if they they get unbearable, or if I start spotting. So for now I'm just here....
