Do you have to buy a thermometer specifically to monitor your basal body temp or can you use a normal digital thermometer? I am TTC and would like to start charting and any advice would be appreciated.
I've been charting for about 6 months and used a normal mercury thermometer for the first 4. I then switched to a normal digital one (got impatient with having to wait 5 minutes!). You can use either one, just make sure you don't switch halfway though your cycle.
Any other questions, I'll be happy to help.

My advice is to get a thermometer that beeps while you are taking your temp and stores the last reading. The B&D thermometer can be picked up at any drug store and does both of these things. I'm famous for falling asleep with my thermometer in my mouth-- beeping keeps me awake. It is also nice not to have to get up and write down the reading-- thus the memory feature. The Walgreens thermometer is nice, but doesn't do those things. I have one and I went out and got the B&D after only a week.
I don't see why a regular digital wouldn't work as long as it takes readings in tenths.
