I've recently had a flare up of what the urologists thinks may be prostatitis. After completing 5 weeks of antibotics and my PSA going down from 5.32 to 2.41
(I'm 49 years of age) I'm continuing to have some discomfort in the lower back at times. I've noticed that when the discomfort occurs (such is not on going, but ratherintermittent) it causes my leg muscles to experience a tightness.

I had a case of Acute Bacterial Prostatitis about one year ago. While the symptoms are some what like what I've had, this round is not nearly as tough, but seems to be lingering longer. There are no signs of bacteria. While I'm on antibotics these symptoms seems to go away, but now that I'm off the medication while the symptoms have not totally returned there is still quite a bit of discomfort at times.

On Monday October 8th I'll be having an ultra sound. The urologist stated that during the DRE my prostate felt normal and could not detect a tumor. However, I'm having this additional test to make sure that nothing was missed.

I'd appreciate hearing from any individual that may possibly contribute some advice on dealing with this problem. Thanks to those that provide such a forum to discuss health related topics.

Generally, antibiotics are given for as long 6-8 weeks and can be considerably longer.

If you keep getting this, instead of acute bacterial prostatitis, they refer to it as chronic bacterial prostatitis. Which means you can get it over and over at different points and have to be treated each and every time.

The usual drugs to treat this are Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacinare. Tetracycline,
Carbenicillin, Erythromycin and Nitrofurantoin can also be used.
