Question Just switched from Cipro to Bactrim for prostatitis - questions...

Hi

I was on Cipro for a week for what I originally *thought* was a case of prostatitis coming on. Every once in awhile I get this and have been on quinolones before (always with horrific side effects but it treats the infection). Anyway, after a week on Cipro, it felt like I had just gone 12 rounds with Mike Tyson (sore and achey all over in muscles, joints, stomach, head, etc). I also had severe anxiety, brain fog and tons of other stuff.

Anyway, I just stopped taking Cipro yesterday and my doctor has switched me over to Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). The side effects from Cipro were so intense that I drank 3 huge glasses of Gin and Sprite yesterday evening just to make the pain go away and flush this monster out of my system (which I read alcohol can do). My questions/comments are...

(1) Has anyone here ever taken Bactrim for prostatitis and was it effective?. What were the side affects and how severe were they?.

(2) My urinalysis w/ culture/dipstick, etc just came back and it was completely negative for any bacteria, viruses, white blood cells, etc so now I'm wondering if I ever had prostatitis to begin with.

(3) If I DID have prostatitis (or the early beginnings of it) would it necessarily show up in the urinalysis I had or would I need a prostate massage/fluid culture to detect this?.

Anyway, thanks for the input.

- Regards, NFIS

Re: Just switched from Cipro to Bactrim for prostatitis - questions...

I've taken quinilones (ugh) and bactrim (similar but a bit safer). I've had the most success with good old doxycycline. But be aware that you may need six weeks of antibiotics to get rid of the infection. The last few times I had it it was more like three months as the first six week course didn't do the trick. Please see my reply to your other post. The most important element is patience, since the getting the antibiotics into the prostate is very difficult. Good luck.
