19 yr old; enlarge prostate or prostatitis

My 19 yr old son saw our PCP today because of some symptoms he's been having (frequency, weak stream). The PCP put him on Flomax and sent off some blood and urine. From what I am reading it is more likely that he has prostatitis and should be on antibiotics. I wasn't at the appt. I know there was an exam and the PCP told my son his prostate was enlarged. Does that mean he does not have prostatitis? Does he have to wait until the blood work is back before we know for sure?

I don't know anything about this but worry he should be on antibiotics and not Flomax. He does have a follow up appt with a urologist, but it's not until February.

Thanks for any info!

Re: 19 yr old; enlarge prostate or prostatitis

It is my understanding that prostatitis can cause the prostate to become enlarged through inflammation.

Flomax will alleviate the urinary problems due to the inflammation.

Antibiotics usually only work with acute prostatitis, which is a sudden, severe infection. Other types of prostatitis do not respond well to antibiotics. 80% of prostate cases are of the second type.

The Flomax may allow for the infection (if there is one) to clear.

So I side with the doctor on this one--I think the Flomax will be more effective.

UPDATE Re: 19 yr old; enlarge prostate or prostatitis

Just an update

My 19 yr old does not have an enlarged prostate. He finally saw the urologist, he has a urethral stricture or scar tissue in his urethra. He will have the scar tissue removed as soon as he can get a week away from school. Since his symptoms are annoying uncomfortable and it's not an emergency he can take his time with it.
