Finasteride (Proscar) or Flomax?

I'm not even sure I'm posting in the right place. I'm just beginning to research all this and am not happy with the results and/or options not to mention the mixed results for various treatments thus far. I saw a post somewhere in here that said "Do not see a regular doctor about these problems, go to a Urologist." I think I'm beginning to see that and am planning on switching to a Urologist. My regular Doctor just doesn't seem to know much about it. I think he's Googling it while we talk. When he took me off Flomax thinking it was the culprit behind the disappearing Libido, he told me the Finasteride had no such risks, and I found out quite the opposite. Not only that, but you could actually cut the Flomax dose in half and add a sexual stimulant, but not with Finasteride.

At 60, last year, I began the urge to pee frequently, and never really finish the process. Urine was dark and difficult so I went to a clinic for blood test and was diagnosed with a UTI, prescribed medication, took it and all seemed well. I guess I was so relieved to be able to pee freely, I didn't really notice that there remained, probably a gradual increase in the need to pee more frequently over the next year. Eventually waking up 4 or 5 times per night. Finally when it became near impossible and painful to pee, once again I went to a different doctor who said it was NOT a UTI but an enlarged prostate (Prostatitis). He too prescribed some type of anti-biotic or something for the infection, did a prostate exam and prescribed Flomax also.

I took these for 14 days and within 4 days had noticed improvement and pretty much normal flow again. But my sexual drive and ejaculation ability is gone. I don't know whether this is from the disease or the cure, but I stopped Flomax with his OK a few days ago and hoping to see improvements. In the meantime, he has prescribed Finasteride (Proscar) instead to shrink the size of the enlarged prostate. However, after experiencing the loss of any sexual ability and reading about all the possible side effects of this, (enlarged breasts?) I have so far avoided taking it and started researching alternatives. I have a actually talked to a couple of people who claim that they too dropped the prescribed drugs and started taking Saw Palmetto, Pygeum, Stinging Nettle and Cranberry and have noticeable improvements in frequent and complete urination. Most say their sex drives came back within 2 weeks after dropping Flomax, so I'm praying for that, and hopefully to see that these alternative supplements handle my problem too. Not sure about what will actually shrink the Prostate but I'm weighing the options in the meantime and hoping that no infections come back. Twice in a little over a year.

Anyway, not sure if this is helpful, but wanted to get into the discussions about it.

Re: Finasteride (Proscar) or Flomax?

I am taking Flomax right now. Im 19 years old and have prostatitis. 8th day of both cipro and flomax. The flomax seems to be helping a little bit. I am having ejaculation problems though, which is one side effect of flomax. But if I were you I would go with Flomax. Good luck to you

That's what I was thinking, except Flomax does not reduce the size of the Prostate, which is the problem, and Finasteride is supposed to. I need to determine first if the sexual problems are related to the enlarged prostate or the Flomax. I no longer have the difficulty urinating, the pain or the frequency issue since the infection is gone so hopefully I'll have time to figure it out. But I have decided to talk to a Urologist instead of my regular Doctor.

Wow, 19 seems awfully young for this type of problem. I would imagine that is rare.

Re: Finasteride (Proscar) or Flomax?

It is truely terrible.. im too young for this.. and the worst part... i had to get a cystoscopy done. AT 19! Its rediculous. hopefully my Cipro and Saw Palmetto work.. I stopped taking the flomax today cause of the ejaculation problems. If i were you I would just stick to cipro. AND dont listen to what people say about it... its rare if it does something bad, plus my doctor is a VERY smart man and knows his study, he said Cipro is one of the safest and most affective drugs out there!

Re: Finasteride (Proscar) or Flomax?

I wasn't talking about Cipro... that may have been what he prescribed for the infection, but it went away and so did the Prescription. I was talking about Finasteride. (Proscar) Can't use sexual aids like viagra with it, but supposedly you can with Flomax, but Flomax does not decrease the size of the prostrate. So I'm going around in circles. here.

Re: Finasteride (Proscar) or Flomax?

Hi

I had issues at an early age too (mid 20's) I had burning sensations in the tip of the penis and other associated problems. I was told try Pumpkin seed oil, which I got in capsule form, and it worked really well.
At times the issue would go away for years.

I'm now 55, and in january got the symptoms again and took some pumpkin seed oil, but it persisted, even to the point that I could tell my prostate was swollen.

In initial doctor visit, the gp started me on an antibiotic for STD's a sort of grab all. It did give me some initial relief. but it would still come back, never quite as bad but still there.

While waiting to see urologist I have had an ultra sound and psa, US showed enlarged prostate, but smooth and soft diagnosis BPH. PSA tests showed slight increase and again diagnosis BPH. which is a relief as I am a Cancer survivor and like most survivors we all seem to fear the worse.

So I am on a new antibiotic noroxin, aimed at possible prostititus. seems to have helped some I am in week 2 and a half, have another 10 days to go.

But .. I can still feel the swollen prostate and associated pains, i get pain in the groin area and other surrounding areas if I have been sitting too long, or been constipated.

I am on all sorts of natural supplements too, I have read mixed reviews on antibiotics and mixed reviews on the alpha blockers.

The urologist told me to come back in 8 weeks and says its prostitus or BPH.

has anyone gone down the antibiotic road?

I really feel my major issue is the swollen prostate and I would sure like to find a way naturally of reducing it.
Any thoughts ideas?

ASnd yes I still use pumkpin seed oil just not as effective these days
