Unhappy Rape victim

I was raped on a college campus almost 3 months ago. I have not experienced any HIV symptoms until now. I have a coated white tongue that doesn't hurt or take away the taste in my mouth. It might be thrush, I'm not sure. Is this a common symptom to be having if HIV-Infected? I also take antibiotics regularly (birth control, asthma meds, etc), so maybe that is causing my white tongue? I'm just generally freaked out by the whole situation. I was treated for gonorrhea and chlymadia pre-emtively and a test proved I did not have those diseases. Plus, I was a virgin before this incident. I'm going to make myself get an HIV test, but I'm very scared. Any feedback would help.

I'm a little confused by parts of your message, especially this part "I also take antibiotics regularly (birth control, asthma meds, etc)". I really don't mean to patronize you if I'm misinterpreting this, but I just wanted you to know that birth control and asthma medications are NOT antibiotics.

I would definitely go to your doctor, both to get the HIV test and to get your oral infection treated.

Veryscared, let me first say, I'm sorry for what happened to you. I know it had to be a horrific experience and I hope you are dealing with it in whatever way possible to help you get through it.

Like the last response, bcp and asthma meds aren't antibiotics. If you mean you were also on antibiotics and it was recently they can cause thrush. However, this should be determined by a physician.

Did you report the rape? If so, if he's found guilty there are ways of getting him tested so you will know if he was positive or not. In the mean time, I would recommend getting tested...not due to any symptoms you may/may not be experiencing, but because you were violated and this does put you at risk. Hang in there and I'll be praying for you!!! Please keep us posted!

Very Scared,

Forget the "scared" and get "very" fast to testing for antibodies to HIV////more than likely it will free your mind from worry.

Have the MD do a whole STD (sexually transmitted disease) workup.

Very scared I recommend you get tested to be on the safe side. Your white tongue is very unlikely thrush. Everybody has some sort of tongue coating, some more than others, especially coffee drinkers and smokers. Brush your tongue really good or buy a tongue scraper. Thrush is not seen this early generally even if you did have HIV, please get tested just for piece of mind.

Good luck

Depending on where u go a HIV test will take from 1 minute to 3 or 4 days.. it isn't that it takes long to test an individual, it is usually just the way the lab work and doctor's do things. If you are too embarrassed to see your own doctor, u can go to a free clinic and have it done. And as much as u don't want to hear this, talk to someone in person about your incident. Some who is the same sex as u, would be better than the opposite sex. One other scary part, I am not sure if they still do this, but I belive they will request you to come back in 6 months For the Test again.. The other issue, for which u know already is being tested for anything else..

As for the white tongue.. I believe there are a few causes for that, a Dental issue, an infection, an immunity issue, other that HIV, sour stomach (??)
for dental, brush, flosh and use
Listerine or it's generic... (which may make u think it should be used for shoe polish or paint remover..) that is if u can stand it, I believe it is used because of the alcohol content.. no, peppermint schnapps does NOT do the same..
(I know this is going to sound cold hearted, (and/or corny)it isn't meant that way.)
These events that have occured, will not clear up over night, please seek medical assistance as soon as possible, let some of the healing begin.. for your sanity and health..

Ho VeryScared

Also, just adding a bit to what everyone has said, wthitish tongue is by no means a definite indicator of thrush as it is. The vast majority of us at one point or another will have some whitish buildup on our tongues.

The real problem with thrush is the over-growth of once-normal simbiotic bateria (Candida Albicans) (meaning it lives in all of us as part of our flora). And it can be easily diagnosed by a knowledgeable doctor. Believe me, if you ever go to your doctor and have him look at this, if he tells you it is not thrush, you gotta believe.

I'm sorry about your traumatic experience, but keep in mind it is inthe past, and now the only thing you have is today. As said here, just get tested, and work on living past this incident.

Best wishes.
