Girlfriend worried and frustrated - Rare Disorders Message Board

My boyfriend started with a pimple on his upper lip, cut the head off while shaving. We then worked in the yard so dirt got in it. His face began swelling, especially his upper lip and the dr said it was a staff (sp) infection. It didn't get better after 4 days on antibiotics so went to a specialist. He said the same thing and changed medicine. His face continued to swell everywhere below his eyes. On Saturday put him in the hospital and now have a new specialist that deals in infectious and unusual diseases. He has no clue so he did ultrasound, nothing and a culture. Today he put a needle in the ulcer, which is what he calls it, and drew out fluids. OUCH! If this doesn't show anything we will do a biopsy. He has trouble talking because of the swelling on his upper lip and the pain in his head is unreal. He doesn't seem to be getting ANY better and I'm very frustrated and thought someone might have an idea or suggestion for me. Thanks for any help.

I can't of course diagnose what the problem is, but I'll give some of my input.. A friend of mine once cut her finger, it wasn't too severe. She did a lot of gardening and the next day her finger was swollen and painful to the touch. Apparently she had exposed her open cut to not only dirt, but pesticides. According to her, it went away on its own after 2 weeks.. Unfortunately your boyfriend's ordeal sounds a bit more difficult than a swollen finger. Please let us know if he is alright.
