rare skin scarring- genetic disorder?
One of my friends gets these patches on her skin, wether it is on her face or even underneath her fingernails, that have fibrous stuff sticking out, like cotton fibers which can be pulled out. They leave behind furrows/scars in the skin.
So far none of the docs/specialists she has consulted have any clues. She is considering plastic surgery because she is embarressed by the scarring on her face.
She is in her early 40s, has Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and is a chain smoker, and thyroid disease and lupus run in her family.
One of my aunts claims she read about this same problem in her college genetics textbook in the 60s and remembers reading it is a rare genetic disorder afflicting those of Russian descent.
Anyone have any clues?
