Chronic ankle pain, no dx - Rare Disorders Message Board

Hello. This question doesn't regard me but my step father. He has been having chronic pain in his ankles for a year or 2 now. The Drs he's seen can't figure it out...they seem to have tried everything. Now they're not looking for answers, just a way to treat the pain. It's so bad he has to walk with a cane half of the time, no medecine has been helping him much. They're trying some sort of treatment now where they give him antibodies from plasma, but it's not even working so far. He's still fairly young, only 40..and he has to retire early because of this. It's causing him so many problems and I can see that he's so depressed. I was just hoping that someone here might have been through something similar, or know where to look...I'm sure he's searched on his own, but I just wish there was something I could do. Thanks

i would try researching -tarsal coalition-.my 11 year old was diaginosed in the spring.she had constant pain,and could barely walk.she saw a orthopod who had a mri and it showed extra bone growth within her ankle that was naturally fusing her joint together.the condition appears rare but if is really never diagioned,hope u can get help..

Well, he's had xrays and mris, they find nothing wrong. They think it could be with his nerves although they haven't found the problem yet. Thanks for your reply.

Has he ever had an injury to it? Maybe even a minor sprain? He could have RSD (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy). If so, there are options to fix it, but it's really time-consuming and takes alot of dedication. Therapy, nerve medicine (ex. Neurontin) and nerve blocks or surgery are the only options I know of since my girlfriend was just diagnosed with it.
