Blue Toe Syndrome or Raynaud's Disease

If there has been a heart attack, with an angioplasty, is the blue toe issue most likely Blue Toe Syndrome, or could it be Raynaud's disease?

If it is Blue Toe Syndrome, would it hurt to take some of the natural remedies that are available for Raynaud's disease?

Is Blue Toe life threatening to someone who is now in otherwise good health, and on medication for heart disease?

Any advice on things to look out for if you have been living with Blue Toe Syndrome for over a year?

Re: Blue Toe Syndrome or Raynaud's Disease

Hi Febran,

Treatment would not be the same for BTS and Raynaud's syndrome.

BTS is digital ischemia caused by microembolism to the digital arteries. It is closely analogous to transient ischemic attacks (tia) to the brain. There is a potential for serious tissue damage due to blockage. In extreme cases an embolism may require a by-pass. It is reasonable an anticoagulant would be beneficial to help prevent repeated embolic attacks.

The underlying cause for Raynaud's syndrome are vasospasms. Constricted vessels are serious and temporary interrupt and limit blood supply fingers and toes. Causation is cold weather, cold water from a faucet, touching frozen food, etc. Emotions for some with the syndrome can be the the basis for an attack.

The treatment would be vasodilator medication.
