breast cancer, hashi and raynaud's any connection?

Hope someone can help answer my question.

I have had raynauds for most of my life. In 1999 I was dx with breast cancer had a lumectomy and radiation. I was jus dx with hashimotos. My question is does anyone know if I am at a higher risk of developing other autoimunne disease's. If so hoe do I protect myself?

Thanks for your advise

Shastaw

Having one AI disease puts you at greater risk of having others. Since the medical community has only rudimentary knowledge about what causes them, there is no practical way to avoid them. They believe there is a gene defect in the lineage of those who are affected. So far, gene therapy is only experimental.

If you underwent radiation to treat the breast cancer, it could have definitely effected your thyroid function over time as well.

I would focus on getting to a place where you feel well.

Re: breast cancer, hashi and raynaud's any connection?

hi,well this is interesting. I developed hypothroidism years ago, two years ago I was treated for breast cancer with your same regime. since january, I have developed a big case of raynaud's. No one can give me many answers, as all my labs have come back normal. They are treating me for scleroderma with prednisone, low dose and adjusted my blood pressure meds, which one was a beta blocker,( and that is suppose to constrict the capillary blood vessels more) so will see if anything makes any difference. How are you managing your symptoms?? I am really getting depressed with all of this.
take care!!

I agree with Reece. A friend has leukemia and her treatment caused her to have hypothyroidism. She's on Synthroid now and doing fine. The radiation can cause your thyroid to not be at an optimal place.

Re: breast cancer, hashi and raynaud's any connection?

I had radiation therapy of Hodgkins 27 years ago.

The radiation destroyed my thyroid (but cured my Hodgkins).

The radiation also resulted in breast cancer 4 years ago.

But anyway, yes, radiation therapy can easily damage the thyroid gland.
