RSD Question Has anyone ever had numbness before? Left hand numb, scared.

I have had RSD for over 15 yrs now and the latest problem that popped up is my left hand is numb. It started about 2 months ago and is driving me nuts. Does anyone else have this problem? Also the same time this started so did profuse sweating too. Kinda scared here and need a freind. I was put on fentynol patches and vicoden about 2 months ago also. Just need a friend and someone to tell me this is normal with RSD.

Re: RSD Question Has anyone ever had numbness before? Left hand numb, scared.

Don't know if it is normal but my left hand fingers are numb alot of the time. I have RDS as well, I just figure it is part of the condition. The numb feeling I have is like a novacaine type, you feel but don't feel if that makes any sense. Numbness can also be neuropathic in nature and that all lies with the nerves. I'll check online for more info as I have just accepted it as part of it, I also have polyneuropathy so I tend to ignore those numb episodes.

Re: RSD Question Has anyone ever had numbness before? Left hand numb, scared.

Hello,

I have been recently DX'd with RSD/CRPS and for the last 3 years I have had numbness and tingling in my left arm and leg. I agree that the numbness feels like novacaine, you can feel pressure, but nothing else. The tingling will get so bad that it causes pain, I am the idiot working my hand to wake it up, I don't think I figured it out, yet.
I also started off with Night Sweats, it was soooo bad that I would have to change my sheets everyday, ewwwwww! Now the Night Sweats are minimal but I have profuse sweating in the upper body, all day long. Then the Acne goes with the Sweating. Yah! like I want to re-live High School! I am still trying to figure this all out.
I also have Body Temp. Issues. It can be 100 degrees outside and I will be the one with a Long Sleeve Shirt or the Dummy that puts the Jacket on at the Lake. I get Goose Bumps all over for no reason. I am the one that will refuse to put the A/C on, It will make my body temp decrease by 20 degrees within minutes of Cold Temp. Environments. I hate it!!!!!!!!!

My hand, fingers, toes and foot feel like they are frozen and cold to touch most of the time. I Love my Slippers in July! LOL

Hello! I have had RSD for three years in my left hand/arm and now going into my left leg. The numbness you're describing is consistent with RSD. It does feel like the area has been treated with Novacaine. I've had numbness since I first contracted the RSD. That is actually how I knew that something was wrong and not merely a side effect from the carpal tunnel surgery that I had prior to this. The doctor that performed my surgery severed the nerve in my hand, which then led to RSD. I have been on workman's comp ever since, and although I have tried lots of therapies, I'm still not able to stabilize my condition enough to go back to work. I'll tell you one thing that helps with the tingling, skin-crawling numbness. Ask your doctor about prescribing you Lidocaine patches. They are square patches with medication on the sticky side. When applied, it provides a cool, pleasant sensation on the skin and alleviates some of the discomfort from the numbness. I hope this helps and that you can get a little bit of relief!

Re: RSD Question Has anyone ever had numbness before? Left hand numb, scared.

Hi everyone including the newbies. I have RSD in the upper left extremity for 5 plus years from a work accident. I have alot of numbing going on in all of my extremities--but not at the same time. Alot of time is the opposite hand, which I always atrributed to doing too much. I also have RSD spreading down the left leg, & my toes will go numb. Not sure if it has to do with temperature changes or shifting my weight to the other side, to alleviate the side that hurts. Sometimes if I don't use the bad side that hand will go numb too! It's like it has a mind of it's own.
I know that the nerve blocks didn't work for me, thus my neuro said I had sympathetic independent pain. I know that temperature changes can bring the red white & blue colors around big time. I live in Maui, and in the summer the AC in alot of buildings is too cold, thus the color with the numbness. I also drop alot of things with my hands (more the left one) due to the numbness. I just take a deep breath and carry on. It is scary only if you dwell on it. I guess I'm just used to it. I hope this helps someone.
Aloha Skooze

Re: RSD Question Has anyone ever had numbness before? Left hand numb, scared.

Hi everyone..I had a letal release two yrs ago on my right knee, after the surgery I had really bad numbness in my left arm that just wouldn't go away! of course all the Doctor would say is "that has nothing to do with your knee" uh duh did they even hear what I said! I still have the numbness plus the muscle in my lower left arm really hurts most of all when I type! my feet also went numb as well if I'm walking they will go numb out of the blue and stay numb for about 5 mins..I just want to cry! hope this helps!

Re: RSD Question Has anyone ever had numbness before? Left hand numb, scared.

Hi Sandy & welcome to the boards! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I never heard of RSD going into the chest. I mean mine is in the upper left extrmity, including the shoulder, the rotator cuff, and my ribs are out of whack, from walking in a fixed position for so long, but is it your chest, like your heart area? Do you have troubles breathing? Have you mentioned this to your doctor? I've heard of extremities going numb, in fact when I first had RSD, went into the ER room once because my whole left side was numb, they ran an EKG on me thinking I was having a heart attack! I just needed something to stop the muscle spasms, & the stupid Dr. prescribed me vicoden (which I already had) and gave me a left arm sling for my wrist! I still have to laugh at that! But I was just curious if there was something wrong with your heart, or you meant the chest, because I thought RSD only affected the extremities?
I saw a specialist a few weeks ago, and when I mentioned to him that my legs were going numb on more than ever now, and that I needed my cane in the middle of the night, he said it was just the way RSD can be. My normal neuro said the numbness is probably just left over residual radiculapathy. Makes you wonder if all these Dr's keep up on things? Anyhow, just curious about the chest area. Aloha Skooze

Re: RSD Question Has anyone ever had numbness before? Left hand numb, scared.

Oh my goodness, does this ever quit. I was thinking there was something else going wrong, and quite frankly was hoping it was. But instead I thought I would look on here to see if anybody else experienced the same thing. This morning I woke up with my right had and fingers tingling like they were asleep, I thought I had slept on them wrong. Well, they never woke up :0) Now my whole arm is doing it , and my left hand and arm started later in the day. UUrrGGhh!!!! Oh So Frustrating!!! Luckily I have been able to continue working, and am not willing to give up yet.

Keep fighting guys, someday hopefully they will come up with something to help us better than what they have thus far. It is difficult to do that, I have my days too, but I have faith and that is what keeps me fighting.

God Bless You All

Re: RSD Question Has anyone ever had numbness before? Left hand numb, scared.

just to be on the safe side,i would actually get this checked out with MRI.any sudden change in neuro status can be stemming from many possible things, including the RSD itself.but there is also the possibility that you could have something else going on as well.believe me, i know.the affectation of the SNS in all this can also explain the sweats since this is indeed regulated by your SNS.

i have about five major medical issues going on all at the same time and have constantly changing neuro status.the smaller things i don't usually worry about too much since this is actually a daily occurance for me,no two days in a row are ever the exact same as the day before,it really is insane to live with.but sudden numbness is something i would get evaluated.this could just be stemming from other things unrelated to your RSD,thats all.you really do need to be certain just what may be going on inside there.you just never really know what in gods name is going on inside something til you take an actual look in there.i have had way too many little suprises suddenly pop up in this body that i just don;t take anything for granted anymore ya know?last year,it was a "suprise" brain aneurysm(didn't see that one coming at all).its always something.i would just get this completely evaluated if more nothing more than peace of mind.this could be a nerve or disc issue too.you just don't know whats waiting behind door number three til you open that sucker up and look inside.i do hope this is nothing more than a change in your RSD presentation.Marcia
