Mirror Box....?

Anyone have input re: The "Mirror Box"...? Back in October there were 3 posts by "InnerHarbor" in MD (assume Baltimore) saying they had ordered a box; but, no subsequent postings. Hope that he/she was successful!

Specifically, I have very limited ROM in my right hand/wrist. Fingers have the waxy appearance, swollen, cold then hot, pain - getting the "claw" hand.

The Mirror Box seems simple to make - DIY; but, then what do you do...? I guess the concept is to trick the brain into "seeing" the affected hand doing stuff normally. I do have a strong back AND a weak mind; so, it shoudl work...<g>...

I'm willing to try anything, of course. Maybe some witchcraft - burning feathers, dance backwards around an oak tree, burying chicken bones, etc.

Thanks,

J.D.

Re: Mirror Box....?

J.D.

Personally I have not used the mirror method but have known a couple people who have. Neither one got really any results from it but there have been some good studies out there so personally I think it falls under the "everyone is different with their own rsd".
The mirror box is where you actually are looking at your good arm/hand but the way the mirror is set up and the way you look at it, it can make your brain think that it is the injured arm/hand but without pain. After some time of this there has been studies of people doing quite well. It's just tricking the brain and is a cheap thing to try,and doesn't require taking in meds so that makes us all happier, lol. Since it is considered a type of treatment/therapy you should always consult your doctor before doing any thing new. Even if you are able to make one your self and do it at home. There are some physical therapists that use this method,so when talking to your doctor you might want to consider seeing if there are any in your area.

I hope I've been of some help. Wish I had a personal view on it but never tried it in my therapy.
Keep us all posted on if you do decide to try it. If you have any other questions feel free to ask away. I'll help you the best I can.
Take care and stay warm,
Deanne

I don't want to break any of the post rules so if you are interested let me know and I will private message them to you.

Good Morning and Thanks for the response!

RE: Consult the doctor - Hah! I have had 2 surgeries w/2 different surgeons and seen 2 "hand specialists". Quite frankly, I think they are all in cohoots. I even got one specialist to admit he never bothered to read the Operative Reports because he already "knew" about my situation.

RE: Breaking the post rules...? I assume that means not giving medical advice w/out a license...?

RE: Stay warm - Yesterday, it was a Spring-like 50F here! But, a big storm is headed my way and last night = pain/ache. HOWEVER, this AM my hand/wrist feels pretty good - considering. Despite the dramatic temp change - it's only 18F this morning.

Bought a mirror and will build the box today. I will post what happens...

Thanks again,

J.D.

Re: Mirror Box....?

J.D.

Yes new members as far as I know can't do pms. I wasn't able to send any I believe till I was a senior member.
I know how frustrating seeing multiple docs and surgeons can be. I've seen quite a few myself. I hope that I am not taking your last message wrong, maybe you misunderstood when I was explaining the mirror box. I was trying to give you as much information as I knew because I had seen that no one had posted to you and didn't want you to think you were alone in trying to find different methods to help relieve your pain.
I would never and have never given medical advice. I just share what I personally know, have read through studies, trials and medical videos. Unfortunately sometimes just having a consult with a doc is the best thing you can do. You have to remember that the docs work for you not the other way around. And be your own advocate and stand up for what you want and what you think that they should be doing. Even if that means you having to say, well I think you should read what is in my medical file, fresh eyes can make a difference.
I'm sorry I was unable to help you and I understand that we all can at times have a lack in belief of the docs helping us and getting us to be productive that is why we all come on here to better understand our disease, help each other through venting when the docs aren't being helpful in the manner we want and to share information that is out there so that when we go to the docs it's not just them we are relying on but our knowledge too.

No, Deanne, I did not misunderstand. And, thanks again for your comments re: the mirror box. I have googled several times trying to find any videos without success.

RE: Senior Member - Seems I should qualify! After all, I will be 68 in a few days and have been getting my Senior discounts at Denny's for years now

Speaking of pain... I started doing my taxes...<groan>... Think I should start a Thread about the annual stomach aches from doing taxes ???

Hi J.D.,

Just wanted to wish you a "Happy Birthday!!". That made me laugh when you said you should qualify as being a "senior member" since you'll be 68 in a couple of days . Just wanted to let you know someone appreciated your humor although I must admit, I'm a pretty easy audience . Happy Birthday!

Dear Easy Audience,

Thank for the B-Day wishes!

So.... When does someone become a Sr. Member and get to do PM's...?

Hi J.D.,

The senior/junior member stuff has to do with your number of posts, I believe. I have no idea about the ability to do PMs being related to member status since when I joined here, we couldn't do PMs at all. I'd assume that this info is in the rules somewhere? Keep posting and you should get to "senior" status very soon .

OK. Seems I am checking here almost daily now.

Unlike my nieces & nephews, I do not play that often on facebook nor twitter; but, guess I could just over do it and post all that "what-I-am-doing-now" nonsense on an hourly basis

Thanks,

J.D.

Re: Mirror Box....?

JD,

Happy birthday!!! I hope its a good one. Sorry I have been unable to PM you with the info. I will try and get it done today or tomorrow. Between the rsd flare ups and other related issues I just haven't had the time. I'm really sorry. I want to try and help you. Hopefully my rsd won't freak out on me so much today and I will actually be able to sit down and tell you all the info I promised you.
Please don't give up on me. Have a GREAT birthday!
Take care and stay warm,
Deanne

Re: Mirror Box....?

JD,

So I tried to send you the info I promised and it said that you have chosen not to recieve private messages. So I can't send them. You may have done this not knowing when setting up your profile. I would go into your profile and see if you did select that,if so un select it and let me know so that I can send you the info.
If you didn't it may be because you are so new to the boards. I really don't see that because even when I was a newbie I was able to receive,I just couldn't send.
I really don't want to break any of the board rules by telling you in a reg. post what sites you can go to. I know of one way that you may be able to inleast search for what you are looking for. If you go to <g> and in the top left hand corner there is a "more" button in your options, click on that and go to scholar. Once in the scholar section type in"mirror box therapy videos". The scholar section is way more helpful because it gives you just medical info and studies. I believe it still has the videos on there too. There are also videos on this website too. You can do a search using the same wording and should come up with some videos. There is also u tube and they use to have videos on how to make one your self.
I'm sorry I'm unable to help you more than that. I wish I could of just private messaged you the links and info. If you are still having any trouble finding what you need let me know and I will try to help more.
Happy birthday, hope you are having a some what good pain day.
Take care and stay warm,
Deanne

Yeah... I double-checked "My Settings" (I am somewhat familiar w/these formats - used similar in the past). But, the Ol' Administrator sez:

"The Administrator has turned off Private Messages."

Guess I will need to wait and post lots of jokes - ...hehehe!

Deanne
Thanks again and I hope your "flare-ups" just go away!

Re: Mirror Box....?

JD,

No prob. I wish I could of been more help. Let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with and I will do my best.
I guess the best thing for you to do is post. Make new threads and answer or comment on others. Hopefully you will become a senior member and be able to get private messages. Jokes are always good, lol. In least you are showing a positive outlook and are able to come on here and joke and laugh. Sometimes laughter is all we have and it does help us in our emotional states that we all get into.
I hope you are having a good week.
I would love for my flare ups to just go away. I know they will but till then it's like nails on a chalk board, lol.
Take care and stay warm,
Deanne

I don't have a real understanding of "flare ups". But, I read about that here and think I am beginning to understand what so many are going thru (Refer to my Tag Line).

I have those "days" when it bothers me more... Then, there's this weird "shock" that I get running up my hand/wrist/arm once in awhile. Very uncomfortable pain. I keep telling myself that's a good thing. And, I imagine that the nerves are trying to "re-connect" and visualize touching a couple bare electrical wires together and the sparks flying. ...hehehe!

Re: flare ups

JD,

Yea I get the shocking feeling sometimes too. It shoots from my hip all the way down to my toes. My flare ups are bad. I can't do anything other than sit or lay in pain. I have these muscle spasms,I call them doing the floppy fish because my whole leg just sits there and twitches, sometimes to the point that my leg will jump a foot or more off the bed. It's crazy and very painful, feels like someone is slowly sawing me apart.
I'm glad that you don't have flare ups like that. Pain is pain and it sucks no matter what but the less time you can spend feeling like that the more you are willing to fight for feeling better. I hope you aren't having one of those weeks. I read on another thread about your snow, hopefully you haven't been outside 24/7 shoveling snow.
Take care and try to stay warm,
Deanne
