Where did your RSD start?

I was talking to the doctor that did the Calmare treatment on my daughter, and he said that he found that a very large percentage of people that he treated had their RSD start in their left foot. I thought that was pretty curious, and I thought I'd ask the people here where their RSD started. This isn't for any type of research or anything, it was just something I was wondering about. If it's really true, it might be a clue to some researcher that knows how the body is wired! Anyway, I just wanted to start this thread for anyone that wants to share

I'll start it off by saying that both my daughter and I started RSD in our left foot. Mine started with post-surgery complications, and hers started with stress fractures.

Re: Where did your RSD start?

Mine started in my right calf but settled in my right foot after a complication from a right total hip replacement.

Re: Where did your RSD start?

Mine started in my left foot after I tore a ligament. I think it probably starts more in the left foot because when we injure a foot, it's usually in our left foot/leg.

Re: Where did your RSD start?

I never thought about that - do you think that's because most right-handed people are "klutzier" with their left side?

Anyway, we're at :

Left foot : 3
Left hand : 0

Right foot : 1
Right hand : 0

Thanks for sharing! I hope we can get some more people chiming in

Re: Where did your RSD start?

Mine started in my left elbow, down to hand & up in shoulder after 2 ulnar transpositions, my doctor let it go too long & it turned into RSD.Up to having my surgeries, I got knocked backwards with my granddaughter in my right arm & tried to catch myself from falling with her I knocked my left elbow into the corrner of the door facing to bathroom & that resulted having my vulnerable nerve (your"crazy bone") off the bone!

Re: Where did your RSD start?

I was first diagnosed after arthroscope surgery on my left knee, but was told then I had been an RSD recipient since childhood...
I live in BC, and I need to find a good RSD Dr., and fast, I am a horsetrainer and breeder, am 66 and my life is flying by quickly now... All I want is to not hurt so much all the time, to have something to help with the breakthorough pain, which turns into almost whole body pain...
I have proved over and over that I am not an addict, but I need pain pills with more than big heft to them now, mainly because as of lately, no-one believes I have this pain... I am running out of options here, and do not want to face what is left of my life, lying on a couch moaning in pain.

Re: Where did your RSD start?

I smashed my right knee into a gravel const. site driveway while strapping a load onto a flatdeck 5 tonne , then 2 days later after icing my knee and it was starting to feel better i looked at my right foot and ankle . they were huge . emerg. ex-ray antibiotics (they thought cellulitus )IV's oral cellaflex (40% failure rate for cell.infection). Then 1 and a half days then my left ankle/foot swelled as well as the right (now they thinking blood clot travelling) Looking back It was stage 1 from april till end of Oct on antibiotics for no infection) . It has been 2 years now (finally diagnosed) and when they flare up they both react . sometimes the right will be larger , sometime the left (they have a mind of there own) . Can't ware socks , shoes , pants .... can't work , Just picked up 2 canes ( and have come to realize I "DO" need them) You guys all know the rest .

I grew up training quarterhorses - I love horses so much, they're so beautiful... What kind of horses do you work with? I'm so sorry you got this ...

Keep looking for doctors that will help you!!!! It really stinks to have doctors treat you like you're going to be selling drugs on the street There ARE some good doctors out there - hopefully you'll find one soon.

Update: (and I'll change it from foot to lower limb, etc., to cover knee/foot)

Lower Left : 4
Upper Left : 1

Lower Right : 2
Upper Right : 0

Re: Where did your RSD start?

I was diagnosed with a Spinal Cord Tumor and during surgery to remove that the tumor had wrapped around my nerve that controls the right leg. He cut that and then I woke up with CPRS. The last 8 months have been a nightmare. No one understands that doesn't experience it what I feel like everyday.

Re: Where did your RSD start?

Mine started in my right knee from a surgery in 1991. Had it go into remission a couple of times but always came back. Quit treatment back in 1998. Finally seeking treatment again. Found a doctor but not too sure about him. It has now taken over my entire right leg and have the ants crawling feeling on my left leg...really worried it is spreading. Any thoughts??? What treatments seem to work the best for you? I had the epidurals, blocks, etc. with minimal relief. The clonidine epidural worked the best. Just have had so many epidurals, it is hard to keep them in place now.

Re: Where did your RSD start?

Mine started in the left foot. I had a heavy wooden board fall on my bare left foot in the garage in 2005. It has since spread by my pain is still moreso on the left side.

Breathe Well,
Nicole

Re: Where did your RSD start?

This past December, I took a bad fall and had a minor radial fracture in my right elbow. I had other bad injuries but they do not factor in. The doctor in the hospital put the cast on my arm too tight causing damage to the ulnar nerve at the wrist. Yes, I complained of severe pain but they just drugged me. My blue, swollen fingers didn't bother them either. Anyway, when they took the cast off 6 weeks later. 6 weeks! Yes, the Ortho dr said it had to stay on 6 weeks, I had a wrist that was stuck bent down, unable to be used and had pain running up to the elbow. We asked what was wrong with it and his reply was, "nothing's wrong. Go home and use it. Wash dishes, clean windows...its fine!" It took us a few weeks to get into another specialist and within 2 seconds she said I had RSD. I had never heard of it but she wasn't hopeful. Since then, I have lost the use of my entire right hand, wrist, elbow and now shoulder.

I'm going to NJ next week to meet with Dr Cooney to talk about Calmare Therapy. I have to do something.

Re: Where did your RSD start?

I'm so sorry to hear of your mismanaged treatment!! That is so awful - just adding more pain meds is NOT the answer if you're having post-surgical complications!!! Grr!! My son had to have his feet amputated (he has caudal regression syndrome and his feet were terribly misshapen and got in the way) and was in much more than usual pain post-surgery. They kept adding pain meds, until an intelligent nurse said "we need to figure out WHY he's in more pain instead of just giving him more meds!" They actually started to look into it, and found that the cast was too tight. The doctor cut the cast and cracked it open just about 1/8 inch, and he instantly stopped crying. I'm SO sorry to hear that they didn't try to fix things with you

Anyway, best of luck with the Calmare treatment!! It helped both me and my daughter tremendously, and the good thing is that you'll know by the first or second treatment if it will work for you. It doesn't work for everyone, but it does work for many people. Please keep us informed!

Re: Where did your RSD start?

Update:

Lower Left : 6
Upper Left : 1

Lower Right : 4
Upper Right : 1

So lower left is the most, but not by a whole lot (6 to 4). However, lower body is way ahead of upper body (10 to 2). We're more "balanced" here on another board I'm on, the left foot is WAY ahead!

Re: Where did your RSD start?

Left arm after a vaccination 2 months ago.
BTW: This is a new world for me (both RSD and Healthboard). It's my friend who suffers. AND is hardheaded about getting proper treatment. This saddens me greatly.
