Talking Back from the hospital for 3 day epidural

Hello Everybody!! I am so glad to be out of the hospital. I went in for the 3 day Epidural spinal block, and ended up having a 2 1/2 week stay. The docs that did it messed me up BADLY. He was inserting the epidural, and hit something that sent me a screaming, and he kept pushing, then after a couple of pushes, decided to pull back and try again. Well, he ended up rupturing something in my back. Then after the 2nd day the epidural fell out, so they had to reinsert it, well that doc had to make 2 tries to get it in, and it was making both legs go numb, so I had to stay laying on my left side. Then on the day I was suppose to go home, I spiked a temp of 104.5. They of course ran tests and found out I had gotted menengitis and staph in my spianl fluid and blood. Well needless to say, they had to immediately transfer me to another hospital. THANK GOD!!! The nurse at the first hospital told us I got them from there. It all ended up in my heart (and I had a heartsurgery when I was 4 which made me at extremely high risk), as well as an infected absess had formed on my spinal column. I don't think I will be doing any more procedures at all. I don;t want any more infections, and I seem to find all the wrong doctors. So after a very lengthy stay at the 2nd hospital (which was so wonderful), I finally got to come home with 6 weeks of IV antibiotics, and using a walker because 2/3 of both legs are still numb and I get VERY dizzy when I stand up for very long. Oh, and as if that isn't bad enough, at 35 years old, I have to have a babysitter with me at all times to make sure I don't fall (that's how unsteady I am). But, it is VERY good to be home regardless of my condition. I am also so glad to be back home so I can chat with you all. I was so wanting a laptop up there.

Wendy

Re: Back from the hospital for 3 day epidural

Wendy,
How terrible for you. I just got out of the hosp. - a 5-day stay. My procedure was very easy because I was asleep. Fortunately, my PM puts me to sleep for everything. But, my catheter came out, too. It leaked for about 12 hours, but it was my last day so they didn't bother reinserting it. I had the same problem with the numbness and had to stay on my right side, but still paralyzed so they reduced the drip to 4ml/hour. That worked in that I could stand and walk around. Once I got home, the numbness was completely gone, but now the pain, swelling and burning is returning and I'm concerned about that. I have an appt with my PM this week to see what's next.
Hope you stay well (as well as one can with RSD),
Vicki

Re: Back from the hospital for 3 day epidural

I am sorry you are having pain again, I did too almost immediately. Doesn't seem to be worth all the hastle, huh? Although you can rest assured that that is normal, it just means it didn't work for you, just like mine didn't wwork for me. It's ok though, if it had, it would have been great for both of us!! God knows what he is doing though, and he is a BIG GOD. I am still trusting in him to carry me through all of this. And, I believe he will you too.
