Should I have surgery? - Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Message Board

I have RSD in my right hand and lower arm due to an injection of medication that was given incorrectly. This has been going on since early 2001. I have seen several doctors--all agree with the RSD diagnosis.

I saw a hand surgeon and his theory is this:
RSD feeds off of a pain source. The swelling I have from the RSD has caused Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. If he goes in and stops the CTS--the RSD MAY "burn itself out". He gave me an injection on anti inflammatory my last visit and said if it worked, this would prove his theory. Well, within about 7 days, I noticed that the tingley pins and needles in my fingers was more tolerable and I am a bit more flexible as the pain is not so constant. I still experience the swelling and sensitivity to temp, touch, etc.

I know that RSD can spread. So, my fear is that if I have the surgery, I may end up worse than I am now. Now, I am still able to work and do for myself. I'd be beside myself if I got worse.

any advise on this would be appreciated.

NO..do not have surgery. RSD behaves in strange ways, and according to those I have spoken to, in addition to my own doctor..surgery can be risky.

I acquired my rsd in exactly the same way. I received a cortizone injection to help a tennis elbow. WHAMMO..rsd. RSD seems to regard most intrusions as cause for alarm, sending the sympathetic nervous system into overdrive.

Do not let this doctor convince you that surgery is the way to go. Everyone I have talked to personally or online that has had some type of surgery said that they were 10 times worse. Have you ever been to [url="http://www.rsdrx.com?"]www.rsdrx.com?[/url] Go and read the section that says "puzzles". This site has so much wonderful info., maybe it will help you make your decision.

GET A SECOND OPINION FROM A LICENCED DR THAT REALLY KNOWS ABOUT CPT AND RSD. I was going to have a possible second surgery on my shoulder and my son's ortho dr saw how much pain I was in because of the RSD told me in no uncertain terms not to let anyone open me up again. He said that any kind of stress can make the condition worse. My RSD is getting worse on it's own, it doesn't need any help from any surgery. I have decided to live with the pain in my clavicle from the surgery I had for as long as I possibly can. If you can live with the way your hand is don't do anything until you get a second opinion!! Good luck with your decision.
