Topamax for RSD - Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Message Board

Hi,

My PM doctor has suggested that I try Topamax for control of RSD (I am to continue using Duragesic at its current dose: one 50 mcg patch every 72 hours).

Do you have any experience with Topamax? Is it effective and safe?

Hi , Let me first off say that what works for one person , might not work for another. The same goes with side effects what one person might expeirence with side effects the other might not.

The reason I say this is because my experience with topamax was awfull but that does not mean it wont work well for you. I know people who have had great sucess with topabax. I know since I got RSD I tried so many different drugs to find the right ones that worked for me.

That's strange. I'm on topamax (75 mgs), but as prescribed by my psychiatrist as a mood stabilizer. It was never suggested to me for my RSD. For that matter, NO drug was ever suggested to me for my RSD, except for pain killers of course, which just help make the pain a little less hellish.
What is topamax supposed to do for RSD?

Topamax is supposed to do something for nerves, but I do not know what. My pain doctor told me it was used for RSD and epilepsy, which I both have.

Hi! I take Topomax (100mg) daily. I take it for the RSD. For me it has helped with the zaps of pain that I used to get. I haven't noticed any side effects. I was on Neurontin. The doc switched to Top because in some of his patients it has caused a loss of appetite. Since I have gained some weight he thought it might be an extra benefit for me. I haven't noticed that effect, unfortunately.
