Control of RSD pain & other symptoms by Duragesic - Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Message Board

Hi,

Since September 14, 2002, I have been using Duragesic 50 mcg for severe chronic pain caused by RSD.

I am very happy with Duragesic because not only this medication controls the severe chronic pain of RSD, it also controls the other symptoms of RSD. For example, the skin redness and hypersensitivity to touch are completely gone. The RSD pain is usually between 2 to 3 on a scale of 0 to 10.

I would like to know why a pain medication such as Duragesic controls the other symptoms of RSD besides controlling the pain. Isn't a pain medication supposed to work ONLY for pain control?

Hi,

I really don't know why it works like that for you, but it didn't for me. It didn't help everything-just some pain. That was my experience with it anyway.

Nice of you to post the info. Are you taking pills or a patch?

My doc offered a Duragesic patch but said it would make me really groggy/foggy, etc. and I had to turn it down. Have you experienced this or any other side effects?

Hi, riceneuroni:

Duragesic is fentanyl patches. This medication has never made me feel groggy or foggy. The only side effect I had from Duragesic is severe nausea/vomiting, which is normal with opioids, especially those that are very strong. The side-effect of nausea/vomiting is mostly under control now because I take antinauseant/antiemetic medications.

I have a question. I have RSD in my foot. If I had the patch would it cover the pain in the whole foot? How big is the patch? How long do you leave it on?
