I was on pain meds from day one. I had darvocet and demerol (pill form) My family practice doctor recently offered stronger pain medication which I refused because I hate being so out of it. She was concerned that i was being undermedicated. I only take dravocet with an occasional Vicodin with a lidociane cream.
Neurontin, elavil, duragesic patches, ketamine all gave me nasty side effects. The side effects are as important to manage as the pain. Maybe you could tell your doc you don't like the weight gain and see if he has any other ideas.
Early on she had me sign a pain management contract about meds so that I thought about my use and probably so I didn't sue her.
There are so many drug seekers that try and say they have chronic pain to get prescriptions, often at more than one doctor's office. If you need more pain meds, have you asked your doc what his/her reasons are for not prescribing it. There are tons of articles on the web that discuss the undermedicating of pain patients. Its nice to have something strong in the house for the awful days or usually nights, even if I don;t use it consistently.
Pain management is sooo different doctor to doctor.
