Hi,
Most agree that as long as the patient is getting some relief from the pain, even only if for a couple of hours, the blocks are still working and the pain from RSD is still considered sympathetic maintained pain. (SMP)
When the blocks stop working, the patient's pain is considered sympathetic independant pain.(SIP) There's not much out there at this point except finding the right combo of meds to ease the pain and exercise.
My first block lasted almost 3 weeks. From there the effectivness of each block decreased. If you are lucky enough to still be SMP the blocks and if done correctly will give you some relief.
Also blocks can decrease swelling and help you move the limb better. Many people would get a block before PT so they would be able to use the limb better.
Each of us are different. When I began the blocks, the swelling was horrible. I couldn't move my foot, or any of my toes. By the 3rd block, the swelling disappeared and I could move my toes.
I haven't had a block for a year now only because the last 2 did nothing, zilcho, zero. I might as well had a good shot of rum instead. My pain now is SIP, late stage.
An experienced doctor should always check your blood pressure and pulse before the block and check it afterwards. Having too many in a row, can lower your blood pressure. It took me a year to get mine back to normal. Also, if done correctly, you should have only a little discomfort in the area of the injection.
Hugs Destiny
