i am a disabled vet's wife i have been sick for 5 years from something my husband brought back from desert storm well my husband has decided that he is tired of my illness and want's a divorce and the way the laws are us wives can't touch any part of any disablity that the va or social security gives i will lose my medical insurce when the divorce goes through my meds alone will cost me 600 dollars a month why arn't the spouse's protected i don't get this i spent 13 years with this man and now i will have nothing because of the way the law's are set i am going to have to accept what he want's to give me which is only 500 dollars a month out of his 3800 i really don't see this as being fair why are we not protected better than we are i don't really see this as fair seeing that i am sick and not able to work from something that he brought home with him there money can't be touched for spousel support or child supprt does this seem fair to us i don't think so this law needs to be changed

Have you consulted an attorney to make sure you've protected all your rights you do have under the law? Is it a rather friendly split, well, as friendly as splits go? How willing is your husband to go above and beyond what the law requires of him? What kind of support system do you have? Friends and family? Are you in contact with other military wives who are going through something similar?

Wow, that is pretty crappy. Are you able to work, or is the illness so bad that it prevents you from working at all? If you are totally unable to work, then you should be able to get your own disability payments, through social security disability.

i do have a lawyer and the law is what i posted i am not able to get social security because i don't have enough point's i am currently sleeping on my daughter's floor because my husband and his brother made my life a living hell so i had to leave the house i have nothing but my clothes and that seems to be what i am going to end up with

Even alimony is set in stone and your lawyer says there's no way to fight it? I'm really sorry you're in this situation. For a while people talked about Gulf War syndrome, but with the new administration it really just fell off the face of the earth and not many people seem very concerned about it anymore. At the very least, thanks for shining some light on a serious issue that probably many vets' wives are going through. Hopefully enough people care enough to want to make some real, positive changes the next time we go to the polls.
