I'm a bit confused. You son's mother took your son to a shelter and now you can't get him back? Because they don't believe his mother has a mental disorder and that's what caused her to place him there? Where is the mother? With him? What doesn't the shelter believe? Do they not believe that you are his father? The shelter is not the police. Get his birth certificate and go with a police officer to get your son back (if this is the issue). You will need to get a lawyer and go to family court if you want full custody of your son because his mother has a mental disorder. Lawyers can get psych evalutations in motion to determine whether she indeed is an unfit mother or has a mental disorder. If you want your son's mother to get help, a hospital that specializes in mental disorders should be able to come in on your behalf- if you believe she is a threat to herself.
