Post Should I stay or go?

My b/f of a year and a half smoked pot today while I was at his house. I smelled it there. I got mad and told him it was over because I don't like drugs and won't be in that lifestyle anymore because I had dated someone like that in the past. He said he was sorry and wouldn't do it again. He said he used to do it in college but quit and then he did it like 6 months ago and then today and that he got it when at a friends house. But he keeps asking me to forgive him and give him another chance and saying he won't do it anymore. But why did he even do that while I was in the house? And I didn't even know he ever did that stuff. I told him it was over and it hurts so much. What is the right thing to do here?

For as much as I hate to say it, I think you need to get out of this relationship. I dated a guy for two and a half years (we started dating when I was 17, broke up when I was 20) that was a heavy cigarette smoker, casual drinker, and casual pot smoker. I am completely straight-laced and did not drink anything until I turned 21, and knew that unless he changed we could never work out. I did my best to change him (always a BAD idea), and he did his best to change for me. He ever stopped all that for a year or so. But as soon as the going got tough he would turn back to that....it was just who he was. We were two totally different people with totally different backgrounds, and I was really foolish to think that I could make him something he wasn't just by wanting it bad enough.

I ended up finding a guy who came from a similar background to mine and who felt the same way about these issues as I. He and I have been together three years and not once have I ever felt the same frustration that I did with my high school boyfriend. It's such a breath of fresh air...find someone with the same beliefs as you. This guy will never truly be able to change who he is and it will only lead to more frustration on your part, more deception on his part, and animosity between the two of you.

I hope it works out...please feel free to write if you want. I know what it feels like to break up with someone who you love dearly but know that you are too different to make work. It was so hard at first, but it really was the best decision I ever made in my life. Best wishes to you!

Red face

Ive got to say something here. Im a 20 year old who used to smoke pot back in my early Collage days and when i met my G/F, she was just like how your describing yourself, no drinking, no smoking, no drugs no late nights - a Good Girl.
Now i feel you CAN change someone, or better said, INFLUENCE them. I dont drink to get drunk anymore, i hardly do pot, on very RARE occasions so in some senses shes changed me for the better. In turn ive openned hr up to what going out partying is all about, got her ****ed for the first time just to show her what its about, and will probably in the near future smoke some pot with her JUST to OPEN her eyes as to what it is. Fair enough you have your opinion and i respect that, but do remember it is a 2x way thing, if you expect them to change, dont be so hard on them. Listen to them when they talk about it, times they've done it, what they feel, etc. You may not like it, but at least you get a hell of a lot more respect from them than just saying NOPE, NEVER AGAIN, BYE BYE.

I would talk to him about his pot use first before I made any decisions to leave. If it was never a topic between the 2 of you before which I dont know if he knew your feelings about this before maybe he needs a chance to fix things and quit smoking it if he wants to be with you enough. Just talk to him and tell him how you feel about it and you dont want to be with someone that smokes it even once in awhile. If he doesnt want to quit or see your point then leave him but give him a chance to stop it if you really want to be with him.
