Post Where do you go to meet friends?

Hi, just need some ideas on where to go to meet new friends. I'm 32. My last job involved working in a small company that had no-one around my age group. For the past two years I have been self-employed working from home. I have drifted apart from my friends over the years (as you do), leaving me with pretty much no friends at all.

As EddieDean said in another thread, it does put a strain on relationships when all you have in your life to entertain yourself is your partner. So is anyone else in the same situation and how have they solved it? Thanks

Hi Chinchilla,
Do you like to learn new crafts..most small town colleges offer mini courses..Do you have any women's groups or Organizations in your area that you could join..You could volunteer at numerous organizations and meet people of your age group.Get involved in like a YMCA or take a swim class,Im sure there are many women and men out there in the late 20's early to mid 30's and older that would enjoy meeting your acquantaince(sp)

It depends on what your interests are.....some of the ones I'm looking at are indoor soccer, self-defense classes, dance classes, community theater, and volunteer work. All of those are great places to make friends, and some of those I'm hoping will get me in shape! How close are you to your neighbors? I'm still living at home, but my parents go to neighborhood parties and card games a lot.

And of course, there are always your good friends on the healthboards! I know we aren't "real life" friends, but I've discovered that this is a great place to look for support and encouragement when it's needed!

If you find any great places to meet people, please let us know!

Get involved in volunteering! There are many opertunities in your home town. This might be a great way for you to learn some new things and make some friends in the process. I am actually in the same boat as you. I'm 34 and been working in a small company where I made a couple somewhat friends but since they are further south of me we don't hang out too often so I can always use more good friends. I am not one to meet people in bars all that much so I'm starting to explore the net and also doing volunteer work in my area. Good luck to you and if you ever wanna swap ideas get a hold of me.

Thanks for the input guys.

I guess I'll have to be less picky and do some courses and make friends that way. I have done courses before but I intentionally keep to myself in those because they are only on for a short time so I figure, why bother making friends out of that?

Yeah Skipper I am interested in some sort of volunteering work too. I will have to look into that further.

Most people I meet I never really "hit it off" with them, you know, you have heaps in common with them and they bring you out of your shell and are exciting and interesting to be with. I am a rather quiet and shy person and I seem to attract people that are the same, or people who seem to want to use me as a one-person audience to talk about themselves and their problems but when it's my turn to speak, they aren't particularly captivated. Anyone else get that?
