What prescription drugs work for RLS?

I've heard of Mirapex, but isn't there another drug that has FDA approval for RLS? Is it any different than Mirapex?

The one that the FDA approved for RLS is Requip. It is similar to Mirapex.

I took mirapex off and on for two years. I generally could tell when I was going to have a bad night. I was satisfied with the results.

My Rx ended and my md gave me sample of requip - I only take 25 mg but it is wonderful. My legs during the daytime feel absolutely great - I wake up more refreshed than ever -

I vote for requip -

Re: What prescription drugs work for RLS?

I started taking Rozerem about 5 months ago, and I have had no symptoms at all since. My doc told me that Requip is a last resort.

good luck

Requip makes most people VERY tired. Even taken at night before bedtime I had a hard time waking up.

I vote for magnesium. that's what your body NEEDS, not a prescription. Every once in a while I come back her to help others. I used to be in that awful RSL boat as well. Hope you guys get over it as I did.

Re: What prescription drugs work for RLS?

Both Requip and Mirapex are dopaminergic agents (the same drugs given to Parkinsons patients in much higher dosages). Other helpful drugs for RLS are sedatives, anticonvulsants, and pain relievers. No one thing works for all, and no one dosage of any drug works for all. Many use 1 mg. per day of Requip, and get along fine. One person uses 14 mg. per day and still has problems. Every case is individual. Diet is important (high in iron and magnesium, low in alcohol and caffeine, to be specific).

cymbalta

I was taking cymbalta for depression and it totally helped my RLS. The very first day I took it, I remember thinking, Hmmmm? My legs feel soo....soo....sooo..comfortable. The doctor said he had not heard of it helping RLS but it was certainly possible because Cymbalta is, also, taken for diabetic neuropathy (is that the right word).

I have stopped taking it for depression but am considering asking for it again for the RLS (if the folic acid and B12 don't work).

I absoulutely agree. In fact some of the RLS medications have magnesium in them...(as well as other things to make the product patentable) I ALWAYS know when my mother isn't take her magnesium or has cut back..because she gets restless legs.

Re: What prescription drugs work for RLS?

My husband has been disabled with back trouble for 3 years now. Since his back problem, he has very bad pains in his legs and when he tries to sleep, he is constantly kicking his legs and it is so bad that it wakes him up. He is on pain medications for his back but this don't help with his legs. Could this be Restless Leg Syndrome? The doctor did mention to him putting him on a medication for it but didn't? Any advice would help?

Re: What prescription drugs work for RLS?

Hi Gang, Well I take forteo shots for my bones and one of the nasty side effects is leg cramps, so already having RLS it has really been awful. My doc put me on quinine tabs one at night and there are not too many side effects as with other kinds of meds. They have really helped. It is an old standby as my father used to use them also, and they have about decided that is an hereditary thing, as my brother and both sisters are plagued with it also. So is a couple of my dads sisters. I also take magnesium.
