Severe Leg Pain

Hi all!! I am new to this board but am a regular over on the back pain board. I have been having severe pain in both legs for a few days now and wondering about RLS. It usually starts in the evening and it is difficult to describe. The best way I can describe it is achy like a toothache and if I lay down or try putting my feet up it seems to get worse. I have always had some leg pain due to spinal stenosis but that pain is burning and numbness and gets better with rest. Do these symptoms seem familiar to anyone. I see my PM the 21st so I will ask her too but in the mean time I was wondering if anyone could give me advice and maybe some home remedy that I could try until I see my doctor. Thanks, Dee

Re: Severe Leg Pain

Dee,

Although people experience different "feelings" with restless leg and with periodic limb movements, your descriptions aren't similar to my symptoms nor are they similar to those of others that I have read about...that's not to say it's not rls, but in my 1-3 years of reading about these conditions, I haven't seen a similar description of symptoms.

In my personal opinion, whenever new symptoms develop, one should immediately investigate the possibility of side effects of a medication one is currently taking or has recently discontinued. Many, many symptoms are caused by medications one has recently taken...even though they may have taken the offending medications for years without previous problems. When investigating side effects, check a number of sources...pharmacists, doctors, web sites, friends/relatives, etc. This is important because there is no one source that lists all of the side effects. I experienced vision problems with medications and after a year of reading, the culprits have been identified....despite denials from 4-5 specialists! Please note few doctors look for side effects and instead prescribe lots and lots of unnecessary tests for fear of lawsuits.

Other possible causes of leg movements/pain include diet deficiencies (anemia, electrolyte imbalances) and sleep disorders like sleep apnea...but again, if I were in your shoes I'd start looking at meds, past and present, as side effects can start at will.

Re: Severe Leg Pain

Hi Deeann:

My pain is just like yours. It's worse when I lay down at night time. And, it feels like a deep bone pain from my hips down to my feet. I currently see a pain doc....I've had sooo many tests done and we can't figure out what it is.
So, I take pain meds at night to help me with the pain.

Good luck, and let me know if you find anything out.

Re: Severe Leg Pain

Thanks , I just got back from my PM and she said I had some major inflammation. So it looks like I will be getting an epi in the near future. In the mean time she recommended something called bromide from the health food store. Apparently, it is a natural anti-inflammatory and I am going to give it a try since I am allergic to n-saids and oral steroids keep me awake for days. I will let you know if it works, Take Care. Dee

Re: Severe Leg Pain

I have been getting bad calf pain in the mornings and if I sit down for 1 minute with my bad leg crossed over my other knee it goes away for 5 minutes.
Sometimes during the day, when I walk my foot goes numb and I have to sit for at least 1 minute.
This is getting worse over the years.
I also have a slight pain in my lower back and butt on the same side.
