How is restless leg syndrome usually diagnosed? I had a sleep study and it showed "A moderate degree of periodic leg movements of sleep with periodic leg movement index of 20.4 periodic leg movements per hour". Does this mean I have RLS?
Periodic leg movement and RLS are two different things, but many people have both; nevertheless, they are two different conditions and not everyone who has PLMD has RLS and vise versa. RLS is diagnosed by its symptoms, which are the need to move the effected body part (usually the legs) to relieve a deeply uncomfortable (and difficult to describe) feeling in them. PLMD is the jumping of the legs.
