Why Do Over The Counter Sleep Aids Give Me Restless Legs

Hi, Why do Tyleno PM,Advl PM even Unisom give me restless legs when I take them. Sometimes I can get away with taking one but if I take two.OMG my legs give me a fit and then I have to take 3 or 4 advil to make legs hurting. Could I be allergic to something in the sleep aids? Thanks Cindy

It's because the thing in them to make you sleep is an antihistamine, and they are notorious triggers for RLS!! They have the same effect on me. It's not an allergy, it's that antihistamines are common triggers for us.

Re: Why Do Over The Counter Sleep Aids Give Me Restless Legs

Its because of the anticholinergic properties of the particular antihistamines used in these products.

Prescription sleeping pills dont use antihistamines, and so wont cause RLS (infact, many of the benzodiazepines will help it)
