Wendy, every person's body reacts differently, but I had nothing but trouble with Sinemet when I was on it. I started off with a low dose, and increased it gradually - maybe 1/2 pill every second night? Just as you say, the symptoms increased along with the dosage. This is called "Augmentation", and it is very common.
One night, I'd get seven or eight hours sleep, the next night my legs would wake me up after only three hours sleep. Trying to take a nap was out of the question, as the kicking would start within about five minutes of going to bed. Even sitting still too long started my legs moving. After a while, I got so jerky it was necessary to work standing at my desk, and my arms were also jerky. Even the twenty minute trip to work became tricky because my legs moved so much I had trouble driving.
The augmentation got so bad that one night I simply went into convulsions and laid on the floor for eight hours, torso arching and curling, and all four limbs flailing.
There are a number of other drugs available, but most folks - myself included - swear by Klonopin. There's another thread going here about K having long-term side effects, but I've been on it since around 1985 - both before and after the Great Sinemet Fiasco - and haven't noticed anything.
Good luck!
