Is having restless legs a medical condition?

My mum gets this when she's tired and I used to laugh at her legs dancing around. Now I get it but I don't laugh at myself. Seriously is it necessary to take pills to combat this? Its only because your tired surely??

Re: Is having restless legs a medical condition?

Yes it is a medical condition and very horrible too!
I have found that certain meds result in my having an attack so I will not take them. One of them that my doc tries to get me to take is for depression..sorry but I cannot remember the name of it.
You and your mother may well have different things that make it occur.

Make sure your not retaining fluid-- that will also cause what i call " shakey legs" my fiance used to do it all the time until we found out it was because of his CHF. When he lays down at night now, I still can tell if he needs to take a water pill...

Your mom should not take over the counter cold medications. Her legs will go wild. Nothing that stops you from throwing up(anti-emetics) except Zofran. And Yes antidepressants make it worse.

Re: Is having restless legs a medical condition?

RLS is a medical condition, and caused by dopamine deficiency. It can cause serious sleep disruption, and can be treated with a variety of things, medications, heat, massage, Magnesium and calcium supplements. It can be caused by low iron as well, so a ferritin (stored iron) level should be checked and if under 100, iron should be taken as a supplement. It is not just from being tired. Can be hereditary. Neurologists treat it, plus sleep specialists.

I have been able to control this and my leg cramps by drinking sparkling water which does contain magnesium.

Re: Is having restless legs a medical condition?

I have had bad restless legs since 2007. Have had it all my life just got worse to the point of no sleep. I took requip for it up till 6 months ago when I decided I didn;t want to take any meds anymore. ( my son has serious liver problems) Some nights are better than others but exercise is the key. Treadmill with high incline at least 30 mins a day. But I find that leg muscles are always tight.
