Re: Rosacea ?

hi dee. i've suffered from acne all my life, it turned into acne rosacea when i was about 19.apparently it's usually middle-aged men who get it the most, or it can be mistaken for an alcohol problem. it was really bad when i had my first baby, at 26, and the photos we have of him in hospital show me with my head turned, or one or two of me with this bright red nose and cheek area when i didn't turn away quick enough.
i tried everything over the years, but it was when i started work again, at 37, that i became very self-conscious and finally saw a specialist. he put me on oxytetracylene, and i've been on it more or less permanently since then. i find i can get away with stopping it for about 3 months max, and then it all flares up, and along with the redness (which never quite goes) i get huge lumps and bumps. i don't just get these lumps and bumps on my face either, i get them 'down there' too, and have had to have a couple surgically removed. i do know that for some unluckly ladies, it can start at menopause.

Re: Rosacea ?

it can affect the eyes too, and can cause lots of problems, so i use drops and gel for them.
unfortunately, one of my sons has the same skin and has had two courses of roaccutane, a very strong treatment for acne which has to be monitored by the hospital consultant. this has helped him to a degree, but now he too takes oxytetracyclene everyday.
i think if you develop it later in life, it can be controlled with topical stuff, and maybe a short course of antibiotics when it flares up.
probably more information than you needed, dee, sorry to have gone on a bit. i'm sure if you've developed it, it can quite easily be treated, but go and see your doctor to make sure. good luck.

sue

It is not just a peri thing but it does normally start around age 40 (that is when mine started) See a dermatologist and he can help you out alot. Mine affected my eyes as well (when it was really bad) but with antibiotics when really bad and topical gel it is under control. Good luck with it I know it can be painful and aggrevating.
