My Hives Mystery

Hi, I'm new here; I hope someone can give me some insight. I was diagnosed with an infected wisdom tooth that needed to be removed, and the denstist prescribed Vicodin as needed for pain and penicillin 500mg 3x a day for 10 days. The oral surgeon couldn't get me in for 2 weeks, so after 10 days the dentist renewed the penicillin; she wanted me on it until the extraction. (I still had Vicodin and was taking it as needed for pain, which was not every day).

When I had the tooth pulled the oral surgeon prescribed Vicodin (lol) and told me to finish this second course of penicillin. The Vicodin was a lesser strength one than the original one, which I still had a few of. That night I broke out in what I assume to be hives. They were patches of bumps in various spots: my back, shoulders, legs, etc. They were not red; they were skin-colored. There was no fluid and they weren't that big. They were itchy, but not terribly-so. It didn't occur to me at first that was what they were. That was a Friday night. The next day I took my penicillin, and 1 Vicodin first thing in the morning. We had a huge family party at our house that day (NOT the best thing to do after an extraction! lol). After everyone left I took my 3rd penicillin and 1 of the weaker Vicodins because it was starting to throb.

Within an hour I had those bumpies again. FINALLY it clicked and I called the dr, who said to stop taking the medicines, which I did.

Here's the weird part though:

I have continued to get these "hives" for 2 weeks now. I have not taken either the penicillin or the Vicodin, and yet the hives continue. They only seem to happen at night, except for 1 time. Now my chart says that I'm allergic to BOTH penicillin and Vicodin, and yet I'm questioning whether it's neither at this point. My mom was allergic to penicillin, if that makes a difference.

I went to the dr today and she basically brushed me off, told me to use less laundry soap. I will try that, but still .... this is getting frustrating! And I'm starting to obsess about anaphylaxis which is driving my husband insane, lol!!

Is it possible to still be reacting to one (or both) of these medications 2 weeks after stopping them? (And only at night? lol)

Thank you!!!!

Yes, you can continue to have the hives for some time after stopping the medication. It is somewhat odd that they only come up at night. Take a benedryl at bedtime tonight and see if that takes care of it.

Re: My Hives Mystery

Thank you for your reply! I have tried Benadryl and it works great, yet the next night I get these things again. Also, since I was on 2 medications, how do I tell which one it truly is? I'd hate to think I was allergic to penicillin (and everything related to it) when it could be the Vicodin. I get strep throat often enough that I'd hate to have an antibiotic allergy. But there must be some way to tell. (And I should get a new dr - the one I saw today said it had to be environmental because it just "couldn't be" the medications. LOL!)

Re: My Hives Mystery

Well, they can test you for the penicillin allergy - not sure about the vicodin one. You'd need to see an allergy doc for that.

Penicillin is a fairly common allergen and hives are usually one of the things people who are allergic to penicillin have as symptoms (antibiotics also stay in your body for several days after you stop taking them which could explain why the hives have continued). I've been allergic to penicillin since I was a kid and can reassure you that there are plenty of other fine antibiotics to choose from.

Re: My Hives Mystery

I'm having a similar problem sort of. I had what seemed like an allergic reaction to Doxycycline got a rash all over my face and neck. It's been 10 days since I stopped taking it and I'm still having this very itchy rash on my neck under my chin and under my ears. How long can medications keep causing a reaction uggg I wish it would go away. It did go away and then I stopped the antihistamines and it came back again. By the way I'm taking generic Claritin which doesn't make me tired.

I did read that reactions can last up to a month. Wasn't sure if that was true though. Sure seems like it is since I've never had this kind of rash before in my life that would not go away for this long.

Penicillin is a very very common allergy trigger though. It's probably that but I'd get tested to make sure. It would be good if they could test you also for Vicodin to rule that out.

Re: My Hives Mystery

Just a thought. You may want to be tested to make sure that you are allergic to penicillin before they permanently put that in your file. I am SEVERELY allergic to penicillin, and my dr. said that many, many people have an allergy to penicillin put into their file when they actually may have reacted to something else, and are not actually allergic to penicillin,so it is always best to be checked.

Your hives didn't sound like the typical penicillin allergy although there could be different forms I suppose.

I broke out in red hives ALL OVER MY BODY, not a single place open. All down hands, palms, fingertips, legs, arms, chest, face, neck, you name it. Within 6 hours of reacting my throat began to close and had to be hurried to the hospital. But then again maybe some people are more or less allergic to it.

Good luck!

Re: My Hives Mystery

I'm not trying to scare anyone but I broke out in hives for almost 3 years with no apparent reason.I lived on Benadryl and I lost a job because I had to go to ER with hives all over and throat and lips swelled huge.I went to a allergy speacialist and he tested for allergies.I was allergic to 60 different foods! He told me to carry an EpiPen at all times.I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006.The hives and allergies were my immune system going whacko. After going through a bilateral mastectomy,4 months of chemo and 7 months of Herceptin,my allergies are totally gone!!!Hives are almost always a sign of a weak immune system.

Re: My Hives Mystery

It might be the penecillin, it might (not as likely) be the vicodan. Have you changed soap, laundry soap, lotion, any type of cosmetic, etc? Especially something you use only at night? Generally a medication only lasts a few days in your system and both penecillin and vicodan have a pretty short duration maybe 3-4 days. If it's continuing for a week or two after stopping both meds it's likey something else. Hives can be caused by almost anything, but a lot of times its finally traced to something your skin comes in contact with. You could try switching to hypoallergenic (no dyes, no scent) soaps, etc. for a couple of weeks and see if it goes away. If so add things back one at a time and see what is causing the problem.

Tigg.

Re: My Hives Mystery

doesn't sound like a drug reaction. should stop when you stopped the drugs. They don't stay in your system for that long (more then a few days)

Dental infections themselves can cause hives. Your immune system gets stressed and reacts with hives.

I am allergic to eggs and sulphites (hives, wheezin, runny nose). When I take a medicine with eggs in it (flu shot for example) I get hives. Not the medicine per say, but something in the medicine.

As Per Doxycyline:

Were you in the sun? Doxy makes you really sensitive to sun and could cause a reactine (i take doxy for rosacea)

Well that gave me a proper scare. I'm over it now though , thats some period you went through in your life, I guess hives were probably the least of your worries once you had that diagnosis, well done, you go girl.
