son signed himself in to treatment

For the past two months or so my 23 year old son stopped taking his medication. He has been paranoid and suicidal for a while now. My daughter called me at work today to tell me that C.B. had phoned her and called her a ##### and told her to watch her back because he was going to kill her. She immediately called me and told me she was going to the police station and file a restraining order on him. I told her that I thought it was a good idea. I hung up from her and called my son and he told me that I was going to pay for what happened to him and so was my husband because he was going to take his life. I told him that I would like him to go talk to someone and would he be willing to do that. He said yes, and I told him I was going to call the crisis line and see if I could get him to the hospital and once I made the arrangements would he still be willing to go and he said yes.

I left work early to pick C.B up to bring him to the hospital to be evaluated. When I got home, I found out my mother had been taken to the same hospital by ambulance and was in the emergency room. My head was spinning..what do I do. Do I not take C.B. to the hospital and focus on my mother? I decided to take him to the hospital and to not tell him about his grandmother. I didn't want it to be a reason for him not to go. I managed to sneak in to see my mom while C.B. was out having smokes. He did want to know why his aunt and uncle were at the hospital. I told him that his uncle had hurt his shoulder and needed to get it checked out. He didn't make the connection that his grandfather was also there. Now I am wondering if not telling him was the right thing. (My mom has congestive heart failure and is not real healthy and C.B. is close to her).

The process to get him admitted was 4 hours. I am exhausted. I am just so thankful that he was willing to go on his own. This is the 4th admission for him in 3 years. Now I have him there it is time to focus on my mom.

Take care and thanks for listening...I needed to get this off my chest.

Re: son signed himself in to treatment

As funny as this sounds, it's great to hear he got treatment. I would definately keep in touch with the doctors there and even discuss doing family counseling sessions with him while he's there. He will get the help that he needs but he needs to understand that he has to continue that treatment when he gets out.

How is your mother now? Is she in the hospital still? I would also discuss this with your son's doctor and see how he/she feels about you telling him about his grandma.

Personally I think you did the right thing by not telling your son. He needed to concentrate on his problems at that particular moment.

Lots of luck to you.

Re: son signed himself in to treatment

dalesgirl,

Thanks for your reply. I just got back from seeing chris and he is still pretty angry. His social worker seemed to think it was in his best interest for right now not to tell him. He is afraid, as I am, that chris will walk out.

I really hope that this is the rock bottom for him and he will stay on the meds. The nurse talked to me a bit last night and she said that the realization of needing meds comes with maturity. I hope and pray he is at that point now.

As for my mom, they transported her to a bigger hospital today. She is on oxygen and has a pacemaker for right now. I don't know what I will do if she doesn't pull through this one.

Thanks for your concern. How are things with you?

Judy

Re: son signed himself in to treatment

I agree with everything you have been told as of right now. I would also again like I said suggest talking to the doctor. I know that my BIL was admitted into a hospital one time and we were told that if he tried to check himself out the doctor COULD see a judge and get a 72 hour extention so the doctor could evaluate him and then they would see the judge again and the judge COULD make him stay longer if they can prove he's a danger to himself and others.

Keep faith that not only will your mom get better but so will your son!!
