I have a 17 year old son

With schizoaffective disorder, and pervasive developmental delay, and moderate retardation.
He was showing signs of possibly becomming violent at school, and was removed from the school by police liasons, he was made to go to court, and when he went he ws ordered to take meds as prescribed. I took him to see his psychiatrist, and she instead of following my recomendation of raiseing his risperidol,,she placed him on Oxycarbazipine.

Well he may have exibited signs of making people fear him before, but after taking the oxycarbazipine for about a week, he became so aggitated he punced his younger brother in the face, and was placed under a chapter 51.

Can anyone leave me with advice as to how to handle all that is going on with my son?

Do you think it is more important to keep his mind stablized than to worry about weight gain, and minimal breast tissue?

I feel the psychiatrist went against my wishes and placed him on something that is typically used on patients with Bi poler disorder.

I told her what his diagnosis was, and his medications only needed raising.
well now that he is out of the home they finally listen to me and raise the risperidol, and he is stablized.

Now they want to cut back on the risperidol because of its weight gain issues and causing breast tissue in my son, and he is on depotestosterone shots, and a doctor wants to discontinue them as well, as the psychiatrist thinks my sons aggitation that occurrs at the end of a shot cycle is a reason to cut back on the meds that keep his behavior in control.

He has only recently been showing signs of aggitation, that I feel is due to stress of having been attacked by another peer that caused a laceration to his upper lip with a pool cue last month, my son recieved 15 stitches to the outer lip, and more than 15 to the inner lip. the laceration was all the way through the lip.

Re: I have a 17 year old son

I need some advice as to how you would handle this type of situation with drs wanting to change meds when he is stable?

Should he stay on meds as prescribed, or worry about weight and minimal breast tissue?

Re: I have a 17 year old son

The dept of human services is siding with the school district that doesnt want to deal with him and his illness, it just so happens that his social worker is also a truancy officer for the school district and has his hands in with washing eachothers hands as to trying to keep my son locked up even though he is stable.
and doctors are wanting to pull back on his risperidol wich will cause his symptoms to worsen.
I feel its all a plot to keep him living in a group home.

Re: I have a 17 year old son

That's really sad, because when I was in high school (last year) my teachers and the other staff of the school did whatever they could to help me. I'm sorry your son has to go through this, but I would stick with whatever gets him well. If he has to leave school because the school district is ignorant, then so be it, but at least your son will be healthy.
