Can you have Schizophrenia and Bipolar together?

I'm pretty sure you cannot be concurrently diagnosed with Schizophrenia and Bipolar at the same time.

For cases where there are a merge of symptoms, it's sometimes 'Schizoaffective'.

This is correct, right?

I have schizoaffective, the difference as it was explained to me is that with bipolar, psychosis is only with depression or mania, but in schizoaffective, psychosis is with depression or mania and also without depression or mania.

I asked my pdoc if you can have bipolar and schizophrenia at the same time and he said "no". I had a hard time accepting the big S. They're going to change the dx of schizoaffective to schizophrenic in the new manual for psychiatrist's next issue. (I can't remember what it is called - DSM, that's what it is.)

I heard this too, but luckily we don't use DSM in the UK, we use ICD instead mainly, so I doubt it will affect me..

And the changes to DSM are only 'proposed' at this stage, not concrete I believe..

I hope you're right about the "proposel". Schizoaffective is much eaiser to accept. What is the ICD?

In the UK, most of our mental disorders and classifications are based on ICD as opposed to DSM (Eg. Borderline personality disorder is called emotionally unstable personality disorder in ICD).

yes, schizophrenia and bipolar are often diagnosed together, and it is called schizo-affective disorder. that term simply means schizophrenia and a mood disorder, which is often bipolar.

I have Schizoaffective disorder, where I have symptoms of Schizophrenia and Bipolar at the same time. Been in the hospital SO many times. 5 times so far this year. In the past year, been in at least 15 times. More than 30 times in the past 5 years, and I was diagnosed at 19. I am now 23. Uggh... On disability now.

Well the thing about mental illness is some of the same medications work for many variations. Thats why I don't think its a bad thing if sometimes doctors have to diagnose someone as bipolar or schizophrenia even if its not a perfect match. The meds are similar enough to help. Of course no matter what we experiment with our doctor until we find the right medicine. Hopefully one day, schizophrenia along with bipolar and other mental illnesses will be seen as a simple illness that we can learn to cope with like any other disability.
