Question Getting help

Hello!

I'm sure you get a lot of "Diagnose Me!" threads, this isn't one of them. I know what my symptoms are, and I've spent a long time working around them trying to live a normal life.

My question is, If I walked into my Family Doctor and laid out the symptoms and other such information, where would we go from there? Assuming medication is warranted, would he be the one to make that call, or would I get a referal to a more specialized Doctor?

I trust my doctor with my life, but this is something I've been trying to work up the courage to do for a long time. I've built a decent life considering the circumstances, but I really don't want to settle for decent anymore, normal or close to it would be great. Adding more people to that equation is something that is more than a little scary.

-Thanks in advance

Re: Getting help

Trism,

Hello...If you were to go to your family doctor with a list of symptoms that were in his/her expertise, he would provide medications. If he feels you would be better served by a specialist, he will refer you.

It sounds like you are working on improving your life which is always both scary and challenging, but the rewards, which you already have in mind, become possible. I encourage you to share with your doctor.

Re: Getting help

I think it would depend on your symptoms. A family doctor may be comfortable prescribing for common things like anxiety and insomnia, but I doubt that family doctors would want to treat psychosis, hallucinations and delusions. I believe they would prefer you see a specialist because antipsychotic medicine would be out of their field.

Re: Getting help

I'm going to make the appointment tommarow if I don't chicken out either way it works out. I just hope my insurance doesn't beat me too hard over whatever I need.

I think my doctor has a sneaking suspicion that I keep hush about certain things, so I'm probably really just overthinking things as usual.

Anyway thanks for the replys, I really appreciate the info.

Apologies for the wait. Probable Schizophrenia is the Dx. He started me on .5mg of Risperidone and refered me to a Psychiatrist.

That was probably the most difficult thing I've ever done
