Does anyone else have this Disorder? I looked it up last night after being on a schizophrenia website and Im thinking that I probably have Schizoaffective Disorder because its schizophrenia and bi-poler disorder in one disorder if that makes sense, Im going to ask my doctor if Im right but Im pretty sure I am, anyway I just wanted to know if anyone else had the disorder. It would be nice to know other people with my disorder,To know your not alone

Yes, I have this condition (I don't really like the word 'disorder') and it can be really confusing unless you get it treated properly.

Don't try to diagnose yourself, because the way your mind works keeps changing. One day you'll think you are very much in need of help, and then after several days you may think you were mistaken about your condition and can handle it okay on your own. You may not recognise your own psychosis.

Best thing is to get it checked by a psychiatrist. I do know that for a diagnosis of schizoaffective you would have to have continuous psychosis even while not experiencing a depressive or manic episode. If the psychosis only occurs while having an episode, then you may have bipolar I with psychotic features. Either way, the medication used to treat the condition is very much the same. Get it before you suffer a psychotic break and embarrass yourself!

Once you are stabilised and get used to the meds, your life should be a million times better.

Re: Schizoaffective Disorder

schizoaffective disorder can be life changing and difficult. the fact that the afflicted have both a mood disorder and a psychotic one can be devastating. the previous post about the difference between bipolar with psychotic features, psychotic depression, an schizoaffective is spot on. there are a lot of nuances and this should really only be diagnosed by a professional.

the good thing is with schizoaffective disorder is that it has a better prognosis overall. and finding a proper diagnosis could help with that as well.

Re: Schizoaffective Disorder

I was diagnosed a few years ago. It took a long time to properly diagnose but I am now on a good mix of medication. It is difficult to deal with sometimes but it's very treatable. Just find a good psychiatrist that you can trust.

Re: Schizoaffective Disorder

You are not alone. I, too, have schizoaffective disorder. I hope it helps to know that your are not the only one with this condition. You would be well advised to see a psychiatrist who can prescribe medication to help you further. You might also want to get insurance to help pay for office visits and medication. Schizoaffective disorder is treatable so there is hope.
