MRI Findings, Appointment on Tuesday...what do you think they'll want to do?

Hi..

I am a 48 year old woman with severe scoliosis and have been suffering with increasing back, rib, and hip for pain the last few months. I just got my MRI report back, and have an appointment with a spinal specialist on Tuesday. I'm wondering what kind of treatment the doctors will suggest?

If someone has the time, I'd appreciate your thought on this?

Thanks in advance!

emily

1. Severe Scoliosis

2. Disc Dessication Noted Throughout Lumbar Spine. There is Disc Space Narrowing L1-2.

3. Disc Bulge Noted at L2-3. Remaining Levels in the Lumbar Spine Show Disc Herniations, Most Prominent Of Which Is Broad Based Left Posterolateral Herniation AT L4-5.

4. Bilateral Neuroforaminal Narrowing Noted Which Is Most Pronounced On Left At L4-5.

5. Sacral Perineural Cyst.

I'm really anxious about what the doctor's might suggest. I've been seen there before, so they have films to compare these to. The last time that I was there in the '90s they recommended PT, which was great. They have a really good department there. They said that I had a 50 curve and they didn't consider surgery at that point. It does feel like things have gone down hill since then, though. I'm having lots more pain...

Ok...I'll stop talking now....lol!

Re: MRI Findings, Appointment on Tuesday...what do you think they'll want to do?

Hi again--

My appointment is tomorrow. Can anyone help me to understand the results of the mri, so I could go to my appointment with a bit of knowledge beforehand? My primary care doctor was useless with this...and his office is even having trouble getting me the referral for the Hospital For Joint Diseases, for tomorrow. This all very stressful...the hospital itself says that I have to bring the referral by hand...that having the dr's office fax it over isn't good enough. So now....if and when they finally do the referral I have to take a train and a bus to go there, and pick it up. I'm in severe pain....and this won't help.

Anyway....guys, can any help me to understand the findings of the mri?

Thanks!

emily

I'm not really good at interpreting MRI findings but what I can tell you is you have a few problems. Was there a final "impressions" section of the findings? That is usually the most helpful as it indicates the severity and conclusion of all findings.

Re: MRI Findings, Appointment on Tuesday...what do you think they'll want to do?

Hi Thanks for replying, Spine AZ--
The information that I gave in my first post was stated as "impression"...that's basically all that I was given. I do of course have the films to bring along to the appointment, so hopefully the doctors will be able to give me some idea of what i'm dealing with. I went to the same place a few years back, so they have my test results to compare the new ones with. I've always had severe scoliosis...but the disc herniations are something new. I'm in lots of pain...my roomate as even asked if i'm ok, because he's noticed that I'm in a lot more pain lately. The thing is that I really don't want to have surgery. I live in an apartment building that doesn't have an elevator and i'm on the 4th floor...so I don't see how I wouldn't be stranded up here after coming home from the hospital post surgery. I'm interested in having physical therapy...I did pt at this hospital and it was really great. I never should've stopped and let things slide. I don't know if the herniations are a nature progression or not...I did fall down a flight of stairs a couple of years ago....but my pain just started to escalate alot during about the last month or two...

It's the middle of the night now...after 3am....I'm in lots of pain, but should try and get some sleep so i'll have energy to get into the city tomorrow for my appointment. I took something for the pain....perhaps it'll work this time? lol

Thanks for trying to help SpineAZ....I hope that you're not in any pain as you're reading this. I'll say a prayer for you before going to sleep...

emily
