New to the board, not to back pain

Briefly:

Dx with mild scoliosis as a teenager, am 46 now; it wasn't bad enough to do anything about at the time, since I was about done growing...pretty athletic in my younger days, do okay now but have to be careful and, honestly, haven't been particularly active in the last maybe five years.

Normal for me aches and pains over the years, but about 10 years ago I was, ironically, doing back-strengthening exercises and pulled/popped something. Had to use a walking stick and was MISERABLE for weeks before finally giving a chiro another try. He fixed me. Mostly. Still had to be careful.

About 3 years ago dx with fibromyalgia and all its accompanying pain. The back, however, is still killing me.

Finally found a back doc, and he took X-rays; apparently L5 disk is just about gone, could barely see a line, and have a couple bone spurs there too. That could explain a lot. Ha.

Have yet to be able to stand an MRI for longer than five minutes, even the newer open ones; am considering the very new standing MRIs, but closest one to me is 4-5 hours.

Since I've seen the doc in August, two months or so now, it's getting a lot worse. Sitting kills me, standing for too long does the same; too much walking is miserable, but oddly enough a mile on a treadmill, 1/4 to 1/2 at a time is okay - I guess because it's even ground and even steps?

If I overdo anything - and I mean ANYthing, I hurt. A lot. And now I'm getting sharp pains and tingling in my arms, hands, elbows, knees - not usually all at once, but say, left arm and right knee...or the opposite.

So, dumb question - am I going to be crippled? This scares me probably more than having an MRI!

Have you tried an MRI while being sedated? I've had a few where my husband had to drive me and my doctor prescribed a few valium tablets I had to pick up at the pharmacy before the MRI.

Oh, yes, SpineAZ gave you a great idea!! My PM doctor orders me Valium to take before my MRI's too. I get a little claustrophobic . Another thing that helps me is that at the imaging place they have headphones for you to wear and they will give you a choice of what kind of music you'd like to hear! I'm not sure if all places are like this though? During the MRI there is a lot of noise (like banging, or sounds like construction work going on). So the purpose of the music is to drown all the noise out-and to relax us. I picked Elton John's Greatest Hits the last time I had my MRI Guess I'm dating myself here....janiee
